About us:

The Myhal Centre Fabrication Facility supports physical fabrication for undergrad/graduate students and personal projects by Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering members. The facility covers a wide rangeof techniques from traditional fabrication with soft materials (plastic/fabrics/foams/wood/sheet metal) to modern digital fabrication tools (3D printing/ Laser cutting/CNC routing/ water jet cutting).

Your opportunity: 

The Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MCEIE) Facilitator uses the resources available in the MCEIE’s two principal design spaces (the Light Fabrication Facility (LFF) and the Rapid Prototyping Facility (RPF)), ensuring that they are organized, well maintained, and sufficiently stocked. The incumbent demonstrates and practices instructional leadership in the use of tools, machines and material selection along with assembly techniques, practical demonstrations, andsafety. This position requires working with faculty and Teaching Assistants (TAs) from various engineering disciplines, and knowledge of the resources available at the Faculty’s satellite maker spaces, so as to support the learning process. The Facilitator support students, encouraging them to use the feedback from their own experimentation to inform multiple design iterations, fabrication and testing.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing plans and process improvements for lab/workshop activities
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on experiment set ups and lab techniques
  • Analyzing and recommending suitable materials and methods of approaching fabrication and/or lab work
  • Disseminating information regarding policies and guidelines to facilities users
  • Determining technical requirements for fabrication projects
  • Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards
  • Directing the activities of casual staff

Essential Qualifications:

  • Community College Diploma in Engineering/Technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related experience in a mixed fabrication environment that includes traditionalworkshop and digital manufacturing technologies, such as computer-aided design and manufacturing (CADCAM), utilizing a variety of materials (e.g. wood, fabric, metal, plastics & thermoplastics) and components (e.g. fasteners, microcontrollers e.g. arduinos, tubes, gears, etc.).
  • Experience using digital modelling software platforms.
  • Demonstrated skills with a variety of tools and equipment found in traditional workshops and digital manufacturing facilities.
  • Teaching experience at University/College level, teaching assistant or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to provide technical advice to students and explain technical terms, tool and equipment operation, and drawings to them.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with manual and powered/energized resources.
  • Ability to design and innovate.
  • Analytical ability.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work to close tolerances.
  • Pedagogically oriented.
  • Individual should be interested in broadening their knowledge in techniques/tools and materials.

Experience in leading outreach activities with young student in STEM areas.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone: USW Pay Band 11 -- $65,669 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $83,978. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
