Description:

Reporting to the Director, Sustainability & Energy Management, the Sr. Manager, Sustainability Office & Services is responsible for providing leadership on sustainability efforts with a goal of improving environmental performance. 

The Sr. Manager provides management and leadership for the St George Sustainability Office, and actively supports the Tri-Campus sustainability committee.   The Manager develops various activities and projects that increase awareness and engagement of staff, students, and faculty.  Actively promoting University's sustainability initiatives through the Sustainability Office, including public presentations, participation at conferences, the production of promotional materials and contributions to trade and other publications.  The Sr. Manager is the primary contact for the Provost’s office, Faculty, and all student unions/committees as it relates to sustainability and sustainable initiatives across the campus.

The Sr. Manager leads a diverse group of individuals within the Sustainability Office, includes sustainability coordinators, work-study students, sustainability interns and graduate students in the delivery of programs targeted to achieve the sustainability goals of the University.

The Sr. Manager is responsible for the development of the Tri-Campus annual report on activities, which includes collaboration with the President’s office and the Presidents taskforce on Climate Change, Environment and Sustainability, as well as UTM and UTSC campuses.  Develops and manages operating and project budgets; manages staff.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Architecture, or a closely related field with professional license to practice in the Province of Ontario; P.Eng required (registered and in good standing with PEO).  Master’s degree in a related field is an asset.

Advanced degree in sustainability management or certification in sustainability is an asset.  

Project and/or change management training preferred.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, and/or ISSP - CSP (International Society of Sustainability Professionals - Certified Sustainability Professional), and/or WELL certification an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 8 years of substantial and progressive work experience in the sustainability field. Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and assessing sustainability and engagement programs in a large setting. Demonstrated experience implementing initiatives resulting in progressive improvement of an institution’s environmental and sustainability practices. Experience in the field of energy management within commercial and institutional sectors.

Experience in managing staff in a unionized environment.

Experience in post-secondary education and/or a large institutional environment is an asset.

SKILLS:

Highly developed interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence others to gain consensus. Negotiation skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to make effective presentations. Budget planning and management experience. Excellent organizational, time management and project management skills. Skill in developing cost benefit analyses and business cases.

OTHER:

Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.  Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines and short timelines. Ability to handle matters requiring diplomacy, sensitivity and confidentiality.  Ability to learn continually “on-the-job” under pressure, on own initiative, often without prior training or instructions. Ability to exercise good judgment, discretion, tactful and diplomatic. 

Proficiency in standard office software applications: Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
