The Stanford Communication Department is searching for a full time manager for the Virtual Human Interaction Lab (VHIL). This is a one-year fixed term position with the possibility of renewal. Person will report to the Director of the VHIL. Website:

The Lab Manager is responsible for managing the facilities, student staff, and outreach operations for the Virtual Human Interaction Lab. Facility management includes troubleshooting technical issues with virtual reality equipment and computers, and debugging code when needed. Staff management includes project supervision of technical developers and organizing lab schedules for experiments, student research assistant availability, and project deadlines. Outreach management includes leading lab visitors on tours and demos of lab facilities as well as possibly some travel and mobile demos.

Prefer applicants with moderate experience in object-orientated programming (Python or similar) and troubleshooting PC hardware issues (such as upgrading video cards or CPU’s). Additionally, prefer applicants that have experience in staff or project management for a large and diverse team.

Prefer applicants who are also comfortable with public speaking and speaking on camera during media interviews about social science principles. Bonus experience includes experience with game development engines (such as Unity), modeling software (3D Studio Max or Blender), infrared tracking systems, ambisonic sound equipment, or machine learning data analysis techniques.

Prefer applicants that can frequently carry equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds, will test equipment that include hand controls, foot controls, and head-mounted displays. Will occasionally reach hands above head in order to test equipment.

Administrative duties will include helping prepare correspondence, documents and reports (e.g. PCard forms, assist with grant proposal preparations), and maintaining and filing forms and documents, including consent forms and master subject logs. Will also order and maintain equipment and supplies for the lab.

Will assist with study participants including the screening, recruiting, and obtaining consent of study participants, scheduling and/or calling subjects for appointments, processing study compensation payments, and thank you letters to subjects upon completion of trial activities. Assist with protocol post-study activities, as needed.


  • Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planned and coordinating experimental protocols.
  • Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
  • Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  • Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
  • Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
  • Co-author sections of research publications and regulatory reports as needed.
  • Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
  • Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.
