Doctoral students in simulations and experiments with complex fluids

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Engineering Sciences

KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.

Project description
Third-cycle subject: Engineering Mechanics

To design cost-and resource-efficient yet safe processes, we need a better understanding of the flow of the materials that are processed, It is crucial to characterize yield-stress materials, also in the presence of additives. Within the EU project YIELDGAP, we are looking for 3 PhD students to study viscoplastic and elastoviscoplastic fluids. We plan experiments, numerical simulations and modelling of the fluid behavior from the basic interactions determining its microstructure. The project exploits highly accurate simulations and state-of-the-art experiments to study complex fluids behavior in complex geometries. We will also model the interparticle interactions and relate them to the macroscopic behavior. The candidates will contribute to develop new numerical and experimental tools and analyse theoretical models. The candidates will have a chance to collaborate with the groups involved in the EU project YIELDGAP

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Dr Tammisola, Prof Brandt, Prof Lundell
