Overview
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.
Responsibilities
Perform the following in accordance with PPPL and NSTX-U policies, programs and procedures:
- Working with other members of the NSTX-U team, participate in the mechanical design of NSTX-U scientific instrumentation systems, including CAD and analysis. Participate in the conceptual, preliminary, and final design review of instrumentation systems.
- Prepare procurement documentation and follow the procurement process.
- Work with PPPL shops to fabricate components.
- Develop installation and test procedures, and implement those in concert with PPPL technical staff.
- Review and provide the administrative close-out of completed tasks.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering
- >4 years experience in the mechanical design and installation
- Experience in a scientific or R&D environment is desirable
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Familiarity with simple mechanical analysis
- Fluency with 3D modelling/CAD and development/review of fabrication drawings
- Ability to work with a diverse group of researchers, engineers, and technicians
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work while wearing all required personal protective equipment
- May require working above ground (15 ft or more)
- Must be able to climb ladders or stairs to reach objects; comfortable with heights
- May require working in narrow or confined workspaces for extended periods of time
- May require extensive kneeling, bending, walking and/or standing for long periods of time
- Ability to lift more up to 50 pounds
Working Conditions:
- Most work will be done in PPPL offices, shops and laboratories, though vendor visits may be required. Work may be on 1st or 2nd shift dependent on facility schedules. May involve work in confined spaces, use of fall protection, other job-specific PPE.
