The bioinformatician will work under the guidance of investigators in the Center for Biomedical Image Computing and Analytics (http://www.cbica.upenn.edu/, CBICA), Director, Christos Davatzikos, PhD.

Ideally, the candidate will possess strong biomedical data processing skills preferably in the UNIX/Linux environment. This position will provide bioinformatics support to the PI, visiting scientists and research collaborators, manage biomedical data, construct data analysis pipelines, develop bioinformatics applications, report and publish findings.

Bioinformatician A

The bioinformatician will work under the guidance of investigators in the Center for Biomedical Image Computing and Analytics (http://www.cbica.upenn.edu/, CBICA), Director, Christos Davatzikos, PhD.

Ideally, the candidate will possess strong biomedical data processing skills preferably in the UNIX/Linux environment. This position will provide bioinformatics support to the PI, visiting scientists and research collaborators, manage biomedical data, construct data analysis pipelines, develop bioinformatics applications, report and publish findings.

Bioinformatician A will design experiments, test hypotheses, develop and implement machine learning methods on multi-parametric data, including imaging, genomics, and clinical data, for an Alzheimer’s Disease focused project. They will analyze and extract key features from extensive genomic, biomarker and cognitive data; solve challenges when working with heterogeneous data; conduct exploratory as well as advanced data analysis; quantify and provide descriptive, analytical reports using data visualization techniques.

The bioinformatician will also keep the PI and collaborators appraised of project progress; build and maintain strategic, high-level relationships across the University as well as external collaborators to leverage resources and maintain knowledge of new or emerging technologies and solutions.

Qualifications: A Bachelor's Degree in a scientific or engineering discipline and 3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Completed coursework in bioinformatics, biology, computer science, and statistics. A Master's Degree is preferred.

  • Experience in scientific computing working in a UNIX/Linux environment. Perl/Python scripting, visualization and statistical analysis packages, advanced shell scripting preferred.
  • Experience working with medical images preferred.
  • Experience creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics.
  • Confidentiality of all HIPAA-related Personal Health Information (PHI) at all times required.

Responsibilities / Duties

  • Managing and organizing bioinformatics data for an Alzheimer’s Disease focused project.  – 30%
  • Designing experiments, testing hypotheses, developing and implementing machine learning methods on multi-parametric data, including imaging, genomics, and clinical data. Analyzing and extracting key features from extensive genomic, biomarker and cognitive data. – 20%
  • Customizing statistical analysis, quantifying and providing descriptive, analytical reports using data visualization techniques. – 25%
  • Presenting, documenting and communicating research findings with PI and collaborators. – 20%
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned. – 5%

“The job pay range encompasses the full range of employees from new hires to the salaries of Penn employees with many years of experience and seniority and is not a precise indicator of salaries of new hires when looking at the top end. Based on what we pay employees coming into this position our pay range is 65,000-75,000 based on education and experience above the minimum qualifications."
