Description

The Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Chief, Section of Infectious Diseases and Global Health.  The appointee will be an accomplished program builder with a strong background in all aspects of Infectious Diseases, an experienced leader to support and enhance the Section’s clinical, research, and educational efforts, and have a national reputation in scholarship with independent grant funding. Academic rank (Associate Professor or Professor), tenure, and compensation (including a generous package of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications.

The Section of Infectious Diseases and Global Health has a track record of excellence in research-based clinical care, discovery and education. The Section has 18 full-time faculty with expertise in all major types of infectious diseases, including epidemiology, infection control, public health, immunocompromised hosts, and clinical trials for experimental therapies.  Faculty members in the Section are hospital and medical center leaders, and direct the Center for HIV Elimination and the Duchossois Family Institute for research looking at the relationships between the microbiome, immunology, and host genetics. There are 4 additional research faculty members.

The Chief will provide visionary leadership, support and mentoring of faculty for the growth of an outstanding clinical and scholarly Section.

Clinical: Provide oversight of the Section’s 4 inpatient consult services, including an Immunocompromised Host service that supports the oncology and transplant programs in the Center for Care and Discovery (CCD). There are very active outpatient operations at the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine (DCAM) and a network of community partners. In addition, work with University and Hospital leadership to strategically grow the integrated network with multiple sites offering clinical care and clinical trials to the community-at-large.

Research: Provide guidance and support to expand the Section’s portfolio of grants, contracts and clinical trials from bench to bedside. The Section is a leader in HIV treatment and prevention, as well as research at the intersection of the HIV, HCV, and opioid epidemics. The Section is part of the Third Coast Center for AIDS Research. The clinical trials program has been very active in the development of therapeutics and strategies for the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. The active and robust research program is represented by direct faculty awards and/or participation (via subcontracts) in many federally-funded grants, non-federally funded research, and industry-sponsored clinical trials.

Education: Support the Section’s ACGME-accredited two-year fellowship program and non-ACGME Advanced Fellowships in Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Transplant Infectious Diseases, and several others supported by clinical research funds.  There is a long-standing global health program in education and clinical research program through the Wuhan University Medical Education Reform (WUMER) program. The Section’s faculty also direct the educational programs for MATEC, the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois, and 3) be board certified in Infectious Diseases.
