PhD Research Fellowship within Ferroelectric Domain Wall for Nanoelectronics

Employer
NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY - NTNU
Location
Trondheim, Norway
Closing date
16 Nov 2020

About the position

Two PhD positions are available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The goal is to develop ferroelectric domain walls for nanoelectronics with a focus on neuromorphic circuitry. To enable these domain walls as building blocks for nanoscale circuitry and to replicate the functionality of biological synapses, a deep understanding of their local physics and chemistry is necessary. The goal of this pioneering project is to combine electronic structure calculations and experimental measurements to develop new concepts for powerful and ultra-low energy consuming electronics for a more sustainable future.

In addition to these two positions, one postdoctoral fellowship is also announced, and will be dedicated to the same project which is funded by a Research Council of Norway FRIPRO grant. This project builds on more than a decade of experience with domain wall research. Examples of our recent research can be found in our publications, e.g. Nature Nanotechnology 13, 1028 (2018) and Physical Review Research 2, 033159 (2020). The PhD students will be a part a larger group of PhD students and post docs working on domain walls and nanoelectronics within the Functional Materials and Materials Chemistry Research Group (FACET - https://www.ntnu.edu/ima/research/facet).

Duties of the position

We are seeking two PhD students to join our team of experimental and computational scientists. One of the positions will mainly focus on scanning probe microscopy (SPM) characterization of domain walls, exploiting the capabilities of our state-of-the-art SPM laboratory. The other position will be dedicated to performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations on domain walls to understand their structure, mobility and electrical transport properties. The PhD students will collaborate closely with more experienced experimental and computational scientists in our group. The PhD students should hold, or soon obtain, master’s degrees or equivalent within the field of materials science, materials chemistry or solid-state physics.

For information about the positions, please contact: Professor Sverre M. Selbach, e-mail: selbach@ntnu.no or Professor Dennis Meier, e-mail: dennis.meier@ntnu.no.

Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in materials science, materials chemistry or solid-state physics, or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Required selection criteria

  • The candidate must have, or complete before the summer of 2021, a master’s degree in the field of materials science, materials chemistry or solid-state physics.
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills as well as presentation skills are required.

Personal characteristics

  • The successful candidates can take responsibility for progress and can work independently.
  • The candidates have good communication skills and are able to collaborate closely with other members of the research group.
  • The candidates must be diligent and able to show initiative on behalf of their own work.

In the evaluation of which candidates are best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal suitability, in terms of the qualification requirements specified in the advertisement.

We offer

Salary and conditions
