The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Singapore Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore. Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from the emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities.

We are seeking a Research Fellow to join our team, working on microbial consortia in relation to the skin microbiome.

Key Responsibilities:

The Research Fellow will be expected to conduct experiments evaluating biofilm formation for different species as well as mixed species consortia to evaluate the impacts of various environmental factors on community composition and function. Further, the Research Fellow will work on developing non-invasive methods for biofilm detection. Methods to be applied will include a range of ‘omics’ approaches, including DNA, RNA and metabolite focused methods.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Microbiology or relevant discipline is required
  • Demonstrated expertise in working with microorganisms is essential and work with biofilms is desirable
  • Experience in microscopy, RNA, DNA and metabolite extraction will be highly beneficial
  • Experience in spectroscopic methods, such as RAMAN, as applied to biological materials and biofilms would be desirable
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required
  • Capable of independent work as well as to work in a team environment
  • Self-motivated and goal oriented for this project

The Fellowship will be awarded concurrently with the candidate's appointment as a research staff in NTU.

Eligibility: 

• Excellent academic records and research potential.
• Recent PhD graduates, or with at most 1 postdoctoral training from a reputable university. 

Terms and Conditions: 
• The Fellowship will be tenable for a period of 3 years.  
• In addition to an attractive remuneration, the successful candidate will be awarded a research grant of S$180,000 for research consumables and research related expenditure.
