The University of Lincoln is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to work on the development of insulated food transportation solutions to cover for the “last mile” delivery, particularly with the restriction of internal combustion powered vehicles in ultra-low emissions zones proposed for many cities. Note the “last mile” is usually from major warehouses to retail / customers and can be a significant distance.

Working closely with members from the School of Engineering and the Lincoln Institute for Agri-food Technology, the Research Assistant will support research into design concepts, mathematical modelling of designs as well as specifying and completing test work on design prototypes and sub systems.

The project has a number of sub sets of research:

  • Thermodynamics and fluid flow in the design to ensure compliance with the operational statement of requirement (SoR) {knowledge of CFD advantageous}.
  • Structural rigidity and strength of the design including resistance to impact damage {knowledge of FEA advantageous}
  • Development of temperature monitoring and control systems to ensure compliance with food safety standards. The products to be delivered are frozen, chilled and ambient.
  • Research into logistic patterns for food delivery and system operational SoR.
  • Development of testing regimens to test and ensure the final production design meets the full SoR {knowledge of design of experiments and data processing advantageous}.
  • Liaison and discussion with sub suppliers with regard to supply of both prototype and production parts {knowledge of CAD advantageous}.
