About the faculty
In the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, research and teaching spans areas as diverse as criminal justice, education and sociology, languages and applied linguistics, area studies, history, politics and literature. The Faculty employs over 200 FTE staff, delivering courses to more than 6000 students. Teaching is informed by a rich body of research, along with a strong focus on preparing students for their future careers. Academic staff are offered support to develop partnerships and consultancy activities with public and private enterprise.
The Faculty is currently located in four different buildings around the compact city centre campus: Park Building, Milldam, St George’s Building, and Ravelin House. Large parts of the faculty are due to be co-locating to a new landmark academic building; part of our ambitious £400 million Estate Masterplan to be delivered over the next 10 years.
Key aspects of the role
- Reports to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor on faculty business, and the Vice-Chancellor for cross-University strategic initiatives
- Provide inspirational academic leadership and management for your faculty, building on the University’s reputation and setting strategic goals
- Ensure exceptional quality is maintained across all teaching and research activities
- Create a unified faculty out of four very different schools with different profiles, priorities, and challenges
- Priorities include; increasing student recruitment, raising the research profile, and modernising and refreshing the portfolio in different parts of the faculty
- As a member of the University’s leadership team, contribute to a range of cross-institutional matters, to help achieve its ambitious vision
An ambitious and inspirational academic of professorial standing, you will bring to the role a track record of leading and managing both academic and professional services. Naturally, you will be expected to have a background aligned with the faculty’s academic disciplines, together with a commitment to the University’s vision and values. You will demonstrate the passion and ability to deliver an ambitious strategy through collaborative and engaging leadership, fostering a vibrant and collegiate culture across the faculty.
You must bring an understanding of a broad range of relevant disciplines, and be able to step outside your own disciplinary field to think more broadly across different subject areas. You will bring demonstrable experience of transformational change, and must be able to take decisions and deliver improvements. In addition, you must bring experience of developing and embedding an inclusive and diverse culture.
