About the Role

Reporting to the Director: FII and working within the Coatings Group, the Research Associate will conduct research in the area of Additive Manufacturing via Laser Metal Deposition on an industry led project. This role is part of the Industry Transformation Training Centre on Surface Engineering for Advance Materials (SEAM). The ITTC includes 3 universities and 11 industry partners and will target the training of early career researchers in an industrial context and pursue ambitious outcomes that are reflected as industry-fit researchers, providing a commercial benefit for the industry.

Core Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with industry stakeholders to produce proto-type parts at LaserBond’s Ltd manufacturing facility
  • Design and perform experiments that are targeted at developing additive manufacturing via laser metal disposition
  • Develop robust manufacturing methods for the application of additively manufactured parts
  • Communicate research outcomes in presentations and reports to the research team and industry partner
  • Contribute to refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers 

Essential Skills and Experience

  • PhD in Engineering (Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical) combined with relevant industrial process development/testing experience
  • Experience in metallurgy, the preparation of samples, interpretation and understanding in the area of metal alloys and composites
  • Hands-on experience with performing mechanical or chemical testing
  • Experience in mechanical testing, SEM, XRD and other analytical techniques for characterisation of metals
  • Evidence of high-quality research output commensurate with length of research career
