The Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University is seeking a 100% FTE Life Science Research Professional 1 (LSRP1). The position is a one-year fixed term appointment, with possible extension for two years.  The LSRP1 will work with a team whose primary focus is to investigate environmental and ecological drivers of schistosomiasis in Africa and in Brazil. Our projects, funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, investigate the viability and cost-effectiveness of a range of control approaches to reduce or eliminate human schistosomiasis by (a) integrating field malacology work with drone and satellite imagery to identify potential transmission hotspots of schistosomiasis and (b) using the available information to develop network epidemiological models and explore intervention strategies in the multi-objective/multi-attribute and in the framework of Optimal Control Theory. 

In addition to the duties listed below, the LSRP1 will work closely with the PI’s to a) design and carry out lab experiments and field work on defined research projects, keep note of the outcomes, interpret the results and run statistical analysis of experimental and literature retrieved data; b) organize project agenda, travel plans and keep control of deadlines; c) assist in all the phases of the publication and outreach process including writing project reports, research proposal, drafts for the media and contents for project and lab websites; d) contribute to lab maintenance, student orientation and supervision.

Field activities for (i) malacology and environmental sampling and snail dissection, (ii) acquisition of drone imagery, (iii) offering training courses on unmanned operated vehicle and (iv) GIS analyses will take place in Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire and Brazil.  Extended travel to manage, perform and steer in-field operations in the field sites (1 month per trip or longer) may require up to 2-3 times per year.

Job Responsibilities

  • conduct field malacology studies on selected countries (sampling of freshwater snails, water quality and aquatic vegetation, snail dissection and identification of snail/parasite species, acquisition of snail biological samples for DNA analysis, operate drifters to measure water speed and circulation)
  • operate the drone and acquire aerial imagery at our field sites
  • process satellite imagery and drone imagery, conduct independently GIS analyses
  • generate maps, tables and graphs
  • properly store, archive and document on line data repositories for data acquired in the filed or elaborated in the lab, on Google drives, Dryad, Box and Github according to data management plans for each project LSRP1 will be involved
  • actively collaborate with the PI and students to interpret the data, spatial pattern, temporal trends in the field sites.
  • support undergraduate and graduate students in familiarizing with sampling protocols and GIS analyses
  • offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures for malacology (snail) field sampling and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher 
  • review literature about GIS spatial analysis of drone and satellite imagery, including use of cutting hedge artificial intelligence algorithms
  • assist in all aspects of the publication process, participate in the preparation of written documents, deliverables, meeting notes, project reports, research proposals, PowerPoint presentations, content for media and project and lab website and he will be the primary responsible to write the data section of paper about the field work the GIS analyses he has been leading
  • support the lab to maintain field equipment, including acquiring new (or spare parts of) drones and tools for field work
  • support also the PI to develop agendas and maintain tight control of project deadlines; support PIs and lab members in the organization of workshops, meetings and travel plans;

This position is based at Hopkins Marine Station in Monterey, California.

Perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments.


  • Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.
  • Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.


Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.
