Stanford's School of Engineering (SoE) seeks a Health and Safety Specialist with experience working in a large, interdisciplinary facility with complex instrumentation and labs. This position is within the SoE and interfaces with a variety of subject matter experts within the University’s Environmental Health and Safety Department. The candidate will be a key contributor to the School’s “Culture of Safety” and work as part of a collaborative team of Building Managers, Lab Managers, faculty, and students.

The Health and Safety Specialist is assigned a geographical area within the SoE and is the primary point of contact for health and safety issues within this area. The person in this role will develop relationships with area personnel and will support them in their efforts to be safe and healthy. The Health and Safety Specialist will perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment for both students and staff. The role will implement EHS programs and promote practices to achieve program excellence in an atmosphere of continuous improvement.

Core Duties*

  • Support the overall safety and health of SoE employees and community through the development, im¬plementation, and maintenance of collaborative and innovative programs, systems, and procedures.
  • Conduct employee and student training, emergency preparedness activities, and/or assurance programs.
  • Identify, assess, and monitor workplace hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, radiological) that could be present in the work area; recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential and work with area personnel to find reasonable methods to implement improvements.
  • Compile data and conduct initial investigations for incidents, injuries, and general complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the work place. Coordinate these activities with the EH&S department as needed.
  • In partnership with the EH&S department provide technical advice to operational areas regarding the university’s interpretation of various government regulations and university policies.

Education & Experience:

This classification requires a bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field with at least three years of progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments/evaluations and provide recommendations for risk mitigation or hazard identification.
  • Quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills.
  • Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety principles and practices; government environmental, health, and safety requirements and university policies; and related knowledge of pertinent scientific fields to which this background can be applied.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and detail orientation and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate current knowledge of Stanford guidelines, policies and interpretation of specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits).

Physical Requirements*

  • Frequently stand, sit, and perform desk based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver's license.

Working Conditions

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.
  • May rarely be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals
  • May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥10 feet.
