Position Focus:

This position is responsible for oversight and management of magnetic resonance instrumentation in the Chemical and Biophysical Instrumentation Center (CBIC), under the supervision of the CBIC director.

Responsibilities include 12 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers with operating frequencies ranging from 400 MHz to 800 MHz, include Varian/Agilent and Bruker models, and are used for small-molecule, macromolecular and solid-state sample analysis. Activities include training instrument users, creating documentation, performing calibrations, diagnosing and solving instrument problems, as well as scheduling and assisting CBIC staff with instrument maintenance tasks including cryogen fills.

As part of his/her training activities, this individual will provide support to students, post-docs, and faculty in their research by helping design and implement advanced NMR experiments including new pulse sequences, assist researchers in analyzing NMR data, and provide NMR analysis for industry and other universities.

It is expected that this individual will keep abreast of developments in the field of NMR spectroscopy, as well as recommend, acquire and implement new NMR instrumentation and accessories, and contribute to instrument grant proposals in collaboration with faculty.

Essential Duties

  1. Participates in the planning, conceiving, designing and implementation of highly specialized state of the art instrumentation equipment and apparatus for a multi-faceted research project.
  2. Solves engineering and design problems to ensure that equipment meets the objective of the study.
  3. Develops reports and proposals for research project outlining machinery available, direction of the design, and development of new instrumentation.
  4. Determines available resources such as electrical and mechanical components and equipment.
  5. Develops cost and time estimates for specific equipment design. Ensures time and cost estimates are met.
  6. Supervises and monitors work of professionals and solicits consulting work from outside labs.
  7. Manages quality control of work performed on research projects.
  8. Teaches research support theories and design. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and five years of related experience in a research development facility or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Familiarity with the theory and practice of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry, including practical experience operating, maintaining and repairing NMR spectrometers.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong communication skills and ability to effectively train users and staff on proper procedures and methods for using NMR spectrometers as well as processing and interpreting NMR spectroscopy data.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

An understanding of NMR spectroscopy with the ability to provide technical support for collaborative design and execution of modern NMR methods.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proficient with operating and maintaining other analytical techniques and associated computers and software such as; solution biophysics and/or optical spectroscopy.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Mechanical and electronic skills relevant to maintenance, repair and modification of scientific instruments including computer proficiency for instrument operation and data analysis.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

PhD in Chemistry or related field. Good interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate working with faculty and students to assist them in operating instruments and interpreting data analysis.
