The Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute invite applications for the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute Chair at the University of Toronto for a term of five years, with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon a successful performance review. The appointment and re-appointment process of the Chair will follow the University of Toronto Policy on Endowed and Limited Term Chairs, Professorships, Distinguished Scholars and Program Initiatives. The successful applicant must currently hold, or be eligible for, an academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate will have a PhD. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2021 or a mutually agreed upon date.

Toronto Rehabilitation Institute – University Health Network (TRI) is a University of Toronto affiliated specialized rehabilitation and complex continuing care hospital located in Toronto, Canada. The KITE Research Institute at Toronto Rehab (KITE) is dedicated to improving the lives of people living with the effects of disability, illness and aging. KITE’s areas of focus include injury prevention, restoration of function, enhanced participation and independent living. Researchers are actively engaged in developing new treatments, devices and products as well as gathering evidence that guides changes to policy and public opinion. With 117 scientists, 122 trainees and 157 support staff KITE is the #1 ranked rehab research facility in the world.  KITE is one of the principal research enterprises at the University Health Network (UHN), Canada’s top research hospital with more than $350-million in total annual research expenditures.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in championing and advancing one of the main research pillars of the KITE Research Institute, namely, prevention, restoration of function, enhanced participation or independent living. The successful candidate should have a research portfolio that is focused on developing tools, processes or recommendations with immediate applicability and impact (within 3-5 years) to patient populations at TRI. The Chair will be awarded to the candidate with the highest potential to generate a substantive and lasting impact on TRI’s patients and their families and renewal of the Chair will be evaluated almost exclusively on the candidate's impact on rehabilitation technologies, interventions, processes or policies, and more so on patient populations served by TRI. The position also requires graduate teaching responsibilities such as supervision of doctoral and master stream students, mentorship of postdoctoral fellows and more junior investigators. Furthermore, the successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to further the development of an innovative, entrepreneurial, healthy and supportive research environment at KITE.

This position will come with an academic appointment within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.

The Chair holder’s remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The candidate will demonstrate evidence of an exceptional research track record through external funding and peer reviewed publications in the field of rehabilitation research. They must also demonstrate achievement of scientific recognition (awards, distinctions and honours) at the national and international level and therefore must be at minimum, at the mid-career level.

Documentation of outstanding teaching performance and track record in interdisciplinary graduate student mentorship and supervision in rehabilitation science is also required. As a senior scientist, the candidate should demonstrate successful mentorship of postdoctoral fellows and more junior scientists. The candidate must also possess excellent collaboration skills, communication skills and demonstrate experience in collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
