The Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time one-year Limited Term Research Associate position with primary research interests in exocrine and endocrine pancreas cell biology, with a focus on membrane fusion SNARE proteins and its role in the secretion and autophagy within exocrine and endocrine pancreas. This successful candidate  will conduct research for three CIHR grants and be part of a strong team of leaders in exocrine and endocrine research.

The main focus of the research will be on the exocrine pancreas, using human and rodent pancreases to investigate the role of SNARE proteins in autophagy fusion events that underlie pancreatic acinar injury as pathogenic mechanisms of pancreatitis.  This involves comprehensive technical expertise in animal models including fine animal surgery to induce pancreatitis, high-level live-cell microscopy imaging, biochemical (immunoprecipitation) and molecular biology expertise (mutant construction, lenti/adenovirus construction).  A second research focus will be in pancreatic islet biology in the role of SNARE proteins in insulin granule exocytosis, involving technical expertise in the above-mentioned assays.

The candidate will engage with the research through project management and scholarly contributions to the project through activities including but not limited to: data collection and analysis, developing and modifying laboratory methods in cell biology including primary human tissue culture and in vivo rodent models of pancreatitis, data management and quality assurance, and developing conceptual models.

The candidate will be in charge of the overall exocrine pancreas research program by: liaising and providingadvice and support in the development of research protocols and grant submissions; prepararing and submittngo manuscripts and abstracts for peer-reviewed publications; conducting literature reviews, preparing presentations for conferences and stakeholder engagement; and providing direction and supervision to other research staff involved in exocrine pancreas projects.

The successful candidate will also serve as the overall manager of the laboratory and assist in the organization of meetings, training sessions, and other materials used in the studies.

The successful candidate must possess a PhD or equivalent with a minimum three years postdoctoral experience in the above-mentioned array of exocrine and endocrine pancreas assays.

In addition, the candidate must have: a strong publication record; demonstrated success in the writing and preparation of manuscripts, presentations, reports, briefs, and scientific abstracts and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals; experience conducting and leading systematic reviews; strong knowledge of issues relating to cell biology,  molecular biology and biochemistry; and, experience coordinating and conducting laboratory-based research. The candidate will have skills in both quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and such that applies to imaging analysis. Strong leadership skills are also required along with the ability to work independently as well as directly with team members and study collaborators.
