This position will consist of both research and administrative tasks to support the work of the Heath Justice Lab, led by Dr. Emily Wang.
Research: The Health Justice Lab has a grant from California Healthcare Foundation to support evaluation of Transitions Clinic Network programs in California. This involves designing and administering surveys of TCN program staff in California, implementing a new mobile application to help community health workers manage their panel of patients, and linking administrative data from LA county jail, Medicaid, other health system payers, and homeless shelter use to evaluate the effectiveness of TCN programs. Duties related to this work for this position include but are not limited to collaboration with other researchers and key stakeholders, administering surveys, data analysis, writing and communicating results, manuscript preparation. Further, the Health Justice Lab is a member of the World Health Organization’s Health in Prison Program Technical Expert Group. Currently, the Lab is working to adapt the Health in Prisons Survey and Database. Duties of this work will include project management and technical support on the survey redesign, communication and collaboration with other researchers, prison health administrators and WHO staff, and presence and participation at virtual and in-person meetings related to these efforts. Lastly, the Health Justice Lab has a NIH/NIDA grant to conduct a randomized controlled trial to see if Transitions Clinic Network programs improve opioid use disorder treatment outcomes. The person hired for the position will assist with the study examining facilitators and barriers to engage in treatment following release using ecological momentary assessment.
Administrative: This position will also provide support on administrative tasks related to the Health Justice Lab, including but not limited to grant writing, project managing of new initiatives, communicating with individuals from other parts of the University and outside organizations, creating and delivering materials related to the lab’s work, and executing other tasks related to the success of the lab’s work. This position will also aid with organizing lab-related meetings, research activities and management, collaborating with other organizations, and local advocacy around criminal justice and health care reform.

- Supervises research within the scope of established study protocol. Adheres to all human subjects regulations as defined by Yale University and the federal government that pertain to research studies.
- Responsible for reviewing, planning, and implementing study protocols and assessing the impact of program changes on research quality. Identifies and makes initial contact with potential funding sources to secure funds.
- Oversees the planning of large multi-site or global studies. Establish goals and objectives, training requirements, productivity goals and financial parameters. Develops forms and questionnaires and manages the application of research techniques.
- Works closely with research faculty and collaborators to identify quality and operational strategies and aspects of study that need to overcome.
- Fosters and maintains cooperative relationships with principal investigators, collaborators, study coordinators, government officials, international partnerships, and study sponsors to ensure for the safe and timely progression of studies and adherence to all study/agency/government regulations.
- Develops original HIC/IRB submissions for multi site research. Collaborate with various PI on major revisions and ensure changes are incorporated at each participating site.
- Uses advanced statistical knowledge to provide support in managing and analyzing data.
- Develops operational procedures for the collection, editing, verification and management of statistical data. Develops and implements relevant statistical programs to incorporate data from multiple projects. Designs comprehensive and rational databases with advance knowledge of the scientific applications impacting on the data analyses and reporting.
- Develops protocols for collection of data. Designs data gathering instruments and related procedures. Tests, refines and finalizes instruments for use in research study.
- Presents talks, seminars or other oral presentations on the methodology and analyses used in scientific studies.
- Composes major abstracts/publications/manuscript.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in a related discipline and four years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Excellent knowledge of criminal justice system. Experience conducting research in marginalized populations. Experience with justice-involved individuals and the criminal justice system.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Excellent interpersonal skills, verbal, writing and organizational skills, and ability to function independently. Professional demeanor. Ability to work with people of different backgrounds. Thorough and detail-oriented. Ability to adapt to a flexible work schedule and prioritize work appropriately. May require some weekend and evening hours.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Experience working with the World Health Organization Health in Prisons Programme. Working knowledge of the Health in Prisons European Database, the history of the survey, and next steps needed to modify the survey.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Experience working with the Transitions Clinic Network. Observed clinical care of people with histories of incarceration led by community health workers, understands mission and operations of the TCN, and has participated in the various evaluation activities of the TCN.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to independently lead statistical analysis of public health and health services data. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office products: Excel, Word, PowerPoint and EndNotes, SAS/SPSS, R Statistical Computing.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Experience with a personal history of incarceration is a plus.
