About the position

NTNU has a vacant PhD position for research related to the topic:

Student engagement in maritime simulation-based teaching activities.

Student active involvement in teaching is currently considered as a prerequisite to improving the quality of classroom interaction amongst teachers and students, increasing student engagement, looking for improved levels of collaboration, reasoning, and academic attainment as the desirable outcomes (Mercer, Hennessy and Warwick, 2017). Simulation-based training methods can be particularly promising to bridge theory and practice in a way that allows for active student involvement. The technological advancement in recent years have expanded their potential in promoting educational goals. Yet, student involvement can take many forms; it can be understood as the use of student active methods in teaching scenarios, the use of teaching assistants recruited from senior students, the active use of alumni networks and unions in teaching activities.

The current PHD position aims to contribute to our understanding of the relationship between student engagement, involvement (in the broad term) and learning environment. The findings from this project will be essential to develop suitable methods for student involvement in maritime simulation practices in higher education. The study thus explores how student involvement is mobilized in maritime simulator training and how teachers and students interact, engage and negotiate meaning in simulator-based learning and assessment practices. Additionally, the study will contribute with research-based knowledge and suggestions for future simulator-based learning and assessment practices in which highlight student engagement.

Relevant research questions for this project includes, but are not limited to:

  • How do the various institutions in the consortium of maritime bachelor programs involve students in their teaching, organization and partners for developing maritime simulator-based education?
  • How do instructors that are professional practitioners perceive the value of student engagement and how is it enacted in simulator-based practices?
  • How do students’ value various forms of student engagement to improve the learning environment and the learning and assessment processes?
  • How are students positioned to participate and engage in collaboration, reasoning and academic attainment?
  • What characterize the methods which can be used in maritime domain for increased student engagement and leadership?

The methodological approach is primarily qualitative, but the candidate will be expected to be able to master both qualitative and quantitative methods for this project. An international comparative approach might be relevant.

The PhD position will be part of the Centre of Excellence in Maritime Simulator Training and Assessment (COAST). COAST is a joint initiative of the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) and The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) and aims to become the world’s leading provider of simulator training and assessment for maritime education. 

You will report to head of department.

Duties of the position

The work will be part of COAST’s vision for novel research-based pedagogical approaches to simulator-based training and assessment methods. The candidates research activities as well as the related teaching and management activities will be expected to work towards this goal.  The candidate is also expected to collaborate with other PhD projects in formulating research design, data collection and other COAST related dissemination activities across the consortium.

Required selection criteria

PhD candidate:

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in maritime or social-science field or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

  • Good written and oral English language skills (must be documented)

Preferred selection criteria

  • The candidate should be qualified to conduct simulation-based teaching in compliance with STCW demands
  • Experience from maritime simulation-based learning
  • Work experience from the maritime domain and particularly within nautical operations
  • Network within the maritime industry is an advantage
  • Knowledge about the four institutions providing maritime education is preferable
  • Mastering Norweagian or an other Scandinavian language would be beneficial since the teaching will be in Norwegian

Salary and conditions

PhD candidate:

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 4 years including 25% COAST related teaching and management activities.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in engineering (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phiv) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
