The Human Biology Program in the Faculty of Arts & Science and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time continuing teaching stream position in the area of Global Health. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (67%) and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (33%), with an expected start date of January 1st, 2021, or shortly thereafter. 

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in public health or a related field or discipline (e.g. epidemiology, social and behavioural health sciences, health policy, management and evaluation, global health) by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen the Global Health program in Human Biology (https://hmb.utoronto.ca/) and the global health course offerings at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (https://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/).

We seek candidates who have expertise in global health, and the demonstrated ability to teach a range of courses in this area. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree-granting program at the graduate and undergraduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, development of innovative course materials in global health, and development of online materials/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent, novel, and impactful pedagogical methods, as well as collaboration or engagement with the broader community of teaching, and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. 

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, grants, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong statement of teaching philosophy and pedagogical research interests, sample syllabi, course materials, teaching evaluations, and a demonstrated commitment to collaboration or engagement with the broader community of teaching. Also required are three strong letters of reference from referees of high standing, highlighting excellence in teaching and commitment to pedagogical inquiry and teaching innovation, ideally in the context of courses with large enrolments.  

The successful candidate will be expected to teach core and elective courses across a range of subjects and levels within the Global Health program in Human Biology. Responsibilities include undergraduate teaching, managing and training teaching assistants, developing course materials, and curriculum development.  Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH) teaching will include a global health course for senior undergraduate and graduate students. Additional DLSPH responsibilities will include the development of joint programming between the DLSPH and Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) such as undergraduate research project opportunities in public health and joint course offerings, facilitating the engagement of DLSPH Faculty (public health sciences and Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation) in joint DLSPH/FAS programming and establishing and maintaining good working relationships with local and global partners to facilitate new educational collaborations. In addition, the successful candidate will have some responsibility for departmental administration and may have opportunities for student supervision and mentorship. The successful candidate must also possess strong interpersonal skills, including the demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across our undergraduate courses and programs. 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health is a Faculty of the University of Toronto that originated as one of the Schools of Hygiene begun by the Rockefeller Foundation in 1927. The School went through a dramatic renaissance after the 2003 SARS crisis and it is now the largest public health school in Canada, with more than 850 faculty, 1,000 students, and research and training partnerships with institutions throughout Toronto and the world. With $40.4 million in research funding per year, the School supports discovery in global health, tobacco impacts on health, occupational disease and disability, air pollution, inner city and Indigenous health, health systems and policy, among many other areas. The appointment will be held at the University of Toronto campus in downtown Toronto (St. George campus).
