Overview

PPPL is seeking two Senior Welders to join our Engineering team, providing expertise in the fabrication and repair of components integral to PPPL's fusion energy research. As an AWS Certified Welder, you will apply appropriate welding processes to join, surface, fabricate, and repair parts of metal or other weldable materials according to layouts and sketches using manual welding equipment. 

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.  PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

Responsibilities

  • Follow Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
  • Follow all safety rules and practices
  • Ability to inspect own finished welds to meet quality standards
  • Examine blueprints and plan sequence of operation, applying knowledge of geometry, effects of heat, weld shrinkage, machining, and metal thickness
  • Tack weld fitted parts together
  • Edge preparation – Prepare, carbon arc, grind, and clean product to be welded
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum 5 years of predominantly Stainless Steel and Nickel alloy GTAW welding
  • Welding school training completion and certification
  • AWS Certified Welder by an accredited AWS certification facility

Additional Qualifications

  • Satisfactorily pass 6G pipe groove welding tests using manual welding processes
  • Weld using GTAW, FCAW, and SMAW processes per ASME code and engineering drawing
  • Weld in flat horizontal, vertical and overhead planes (all position welding)
  • Knowledge of weld defects and techniques to prevent internal and external weld defects
  • Must demonstrate ability to use the oxy-fuel cutting process
  • Understand weld symbols, layout and processes from blue prints
  • Able to pass NDT Inspections for Liquid Penetrant and Radiographic Testing
  • Knowledge of UT inspection and MAG Particle inspection desirable     

Physical Requirements

  • May require working above ground (15 ft or more)
  • Ability to climb ladders or stairs to reach objects; comfortable with heights
  • May require working in narrow or confined work spaces for extended periods of time
  • May require frequent  kneeling, bending, walking and/or standing for long periods of time
  • Ability to move parts into position, manually or by hoist or crane
  • Must be able to perform welding work while wearing all required personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a filtering face piece and/or tight fitting respirator
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
