The School of International Studies is a School rooted in the disciplines of international relations, history and political science, comprising more than 400 students and 19 academic staff members from 11 countries. The School offers 2 BA degree programmes, 2 Master’s degree programmes, and a PhD programme. The role holder will be expected to contribute approximately 4 modules per year in the School’s undergraduate and possibly master’s programmes, taking responsibility for the design of modules/courses so as to maintain high teaching standards and contribute significantly to the development of innovative and student-centred teaching methods and assessments in the School of International Studies. Modules that the candidate might be expected teach (or contribute to in team teaching) include Core Concepts in International Relations and World History, Quantitative Methods, China in International Relations, and/or Introduction to International Relations. We have an interest in hiring someone with strengths and experience in international relations and perhaps a secondary interest in international public policy to develop the research and teaching areas covered by the School. The role holder will be able to develop modules of their own, and contribute to existing modules in the School. Academic and experiential breadth, depth, and flexibility are qualities we value.
The role holder will participate in the daily life, management and strategic planning of the School, and contribute to the University’s strategic planning processes. The role holder will also be expected to contribute to the research output of the School, bring in grants, and guide students in their own research, whether at the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral levels. If an experienced teacher and research, the person might help mentor junior faculty in teaching, research and administration. She/he will act as principal investigator on major research projects in the field and will identify opportunities for the development of new research projects and contribute to collaborative research projects with colleagues at UNNC, on Nottingham’s other two campuses and/or elsewhere. The person will be expected to champion and embrace the interdisciplinary nature of research and teaching within International Studies.
Candidates will need to have a PhD in International Relations or related discipline and a demonstrable ability to teach in the area of international relations and secondarily in international public policy. Some experience of teaching/tutorial work in relevant subjects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level in an international English-speaking institution, as well as evidence of peer-reviewed research outputs in International Relations are also essential requirements of this post.
Salary will be within the range of RMB 411,197- RMB 541,469 per annum depending on skills and experience (salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance). In addition, an attractive package including employment service allowance (accommodation and annual return airfare to home country for candidate and family), tuition for children at local international school, moving expenses, and insurance will be provided for international appointments.
The post will initially be offered on a fixed term contract with the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China for a period of 5 years starting February 2021 if possible in a covid-19 environment, or as soon as possible thereafter. This contract may be extended on an indefinite basis by mutual agreement.
