About the Department of Chemical Engineering

Our academic staff are passionate about undertaking world class research in Chemical Engineering. The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and offers a supportive collaborative environment for innovative research.

Industry Engagement is a key focus, and we carry out research projects based on deep collaborations with government and business and work with organisations that provide internship opportunities for our students.

You'll find smart people, emerging solutions to big problems, and plenty of chances to create a real difference in the world!

The opportunities

MSE is seeking to appoint two motivated and engaging emerging academics with backgrounds in bioprocessing research. One role will focus on using analytical methods including proteomics to develop links between yeast composition, processing, and product flavour and texture, in particular in relation to protein and peptide profiles (analytical biochemistry role). The other will focus on the yeast cultivation, hydrolysis and processing aspects of the investigation (fermentation role).

The 2 roles will work as part of an ARC Linkage Project working with a significant industry partner. The research seeks to develop new understanding of the effect of yeast strain, cultivation conditions and biomass processing on the flavour and texture of yeast hydrolysates.

Both roles will work under the supervision of Associate Professor Greg Martin and Professor Sally Gras. You will work closely with the industry partner and other collaborators to translate your research into real-world results. As a senior member of the research lab you will be expected to conduct high quality experimental research and help lead lab operations. You will conduct your research in a manner that respects confidentiality for the industry partner.

For further details on the specific details of each role please refer to the attached PDs.

About you

You will be passionate researcher driven by the opportunity to produce an excellent standard of research and drive outcomes for the industry partner. Your excellent interpersonal skills will enable you to work with a diverse group of people and communicate your research to various audiences. Outstanding organisational skills and time management will support you in balancing competing priorities and delivering to project timeframes.

You will have

  • A PhD in a relevant engineering or science discipline, ideally with experience in bioprocessing;
  • Experience in proteomic and peptide characterisation including mass spectroscopy and chromatography and a demonstrated understanding of flavour chemistry (analytical biochemistry role);
  • Experience in microbial fermentation and an understanding of the general principles of applied microbiology and enzymic reactions (fermentation role);
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use a range of analytical tools to support decision-making;

What we offer you

We offer flexibility, whatever that may mean for you. Many of our benefit programs and onsite amenities are aimed at supporting you - including generous leave, child care subsidies, discounted parking, medical and health care. We offer extensive opportunities for personal and professional development, and we’ll support you in doing what you love.
