The Department of Geography at Durham comprises 68 academic staff (approximately equally divided between physical and human geography), a graduate school of around 100 research students, around 40 taught postgraduate students and more than 650 undergraduates. The Department is well supported with technical staff, including a cartography unit, and administrative staff.
The most recent QS rankings for Geography placed Durham 7th overall in the world, its 5th year in the top ten, and 1st for citations in the discipline. The department is recurrently ranked in the top handful of programmes in the UK by various league tables; in 2016, we were ranked 2nd in the Times Good University Guide and 3rd in both the Complete University Guide and the Guardian University Guide. The Department was graded top for research power (quality weighted by volume) in UK geography in REF 2014 and 3rd for iGPA (average score scaled by proportion of staff submitted). With 43% of work assessed as being in the highest category, it produced the largest number of world-leading (4*) publications in the country.
The Department of Geography at Durham University seeks to appoint a full-time Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Organic Geochemistry and Palaeoclimate to join the research team led by Professor Erin McClymont as part of the European Research Council (ERC)-funded project “ANTSIE”. The post is fixed term for 3 years.
The ANTSIE project (ANTarctic Sea Ice Evolution from a novel biological archive) aims to reconstruct sea-ice histories from geochemical changes in snow petrel diet. The project will focus on the eastern Weddell Sea, from the Last Glacial Maximum to present. ANTSIE will combine investigations into snow petrel foraging, geochemical characterisation of preserved snow petrel stomach oils, and sea ice modelling. The project team includes 2 PhD researchers, 2 PDRAs, a technician, and investigators at both Durham University and the British Antarctic Survey.
The overall aim of this PDRA position will be to reconstruct changes to snow petrel diet and sea-ice conditions from accumulated deposits of regurgitated stomach oils generated by snow petrels where they nest above the Antarctic ice sheet. These stomach oil deposits (sometimes referred to as ‘Antarctic mumiyo’) can be tens of thousands of years old, and have previously been radiocarbon dated as a way of reconstructing ice sheet thinning histories. In this project, the PDRA will focus on the application of stable isotope and organic geochemistry (biomarker) analysis to identify and reconstruct key prey species and reconstruct changes in the sea ice environment through time. The PDRA will focus on characterising a range of lipids and fatty acids, and will undertake both bulk and compound-specific isotope analysis. The PDRA will also apply trace metal analysis to support the organic geochemistry work.
The applicant will have experience in the preparation and analysis of samples using organic geochemistry analysis, with applications in reconstructing past environments and/or diets. Please see the full list of responsibilities and person specification given below.
The successful applicant will join the ANTSIE team and a large internationally recognised group of researchers in the Department of Geography at Durham University, including the Ice Sheets and Sea-level Cluster https://www.dur.ac.uk/geography/icesheetsandsealevel/ The Department of Geography laboratories contain an extensive suite of preparation and analysis facilities, including those required for organic geochemistry and trace metal analysis (e.g. GC, GCMS, GCIRMS, XRF, ICPMS; see https://www.dur.ac.uk/geography/facilities/
- To prepare and analyse samples using organic geochemistry and stable isotope methods (extraction, separation, derivatisation steps; analysis by GC / GCMS / GCIRMS).
- To prepare and analyse samples for trace metal content (XRF scanning, discrete sample analysis by ICPMS).
- To understand and convey material of a specialist or highly technical nature to the team or group of people through presentations and discussions that leads to the presentation of research papers in conferences and publications.
- To prepare and deliver presentations on research outputs/activities to audiences which may include: research sponsors, academic and non-academic audiences.
- To publish high quality outputs, including papers for submission to peer reviewed journals and papers for presentation at conferences and workshops under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder.
- To assist with the development of research objectives and proposals.
- To conduct individual and collaborative research projects under the direction of the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder.
- To work with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and other colleagues in the research group, as appropriate, to identify areas for research, develop new research methods and extend the research portfolio.
- To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and offering creative or innovative solutions.
- To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
- To plan and manage own research activity, research resources in collaboration with others and contribute to the planning of research projects.
- To deliver training in research techniques/approaches to peers, visitors and students as appropriate.
- To be involved in student supervision, as appropriate, and assist with the assessment of the knowledge of students.

The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.
This post is fixed term for a maximum of 36 months. The funding for this post is available from 01/12/2020. Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1st December 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
- A good first degree in physical geography, earth sciences, or a physical science.
- A PhD (or be close to submission) in physical geography, earth sciences or a related subject.
- Experience in conducting high quality academic research.
- Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-ranked journals.
- Demonstrable ability to present research papers at national/international conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community.
- Experience in the practical preparation and analysis of samples using organic geochemistry techniques, for reconstructing past diets and/or environments (e.g. by GC, GCMS).
- Demonstrable ability to report, interrogate and interpret geochemical data sets
- Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings.
- Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career.
- A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career.
- Knowledge of one or more of marine geochemistry, polar palaeo-climates, ice sheet history
- Experience in sample preparation and analysis for inorganic geochemical (e.g. trace metal) or stable isotope analysis
- Demonstrable ability to plan and manage independent research.
