Role Description

Digital Agriculture aims to use digital information and technologies to improve the efficiency, profitability and environmental impacts of farming. For smallholder tea producers in Kenya, nutrient management is critical to ensure sustainable yields, and methods to help farmers to apply optimal amounts of fertiliser at the correct time and in the right place should improve smallholder incomes whilst minimising costs.

This post is to support a new two-year Technology Strategy Board project, involving UK and Kenyan companies, to develop and implement a digital tea crop nutrient management model and platform to help smallholder farmers in Kenya improve crop, soil and nutrient management.

Cranfield University welcomes applications for a conscientious Research Assistant (who has recently submitted their PhD) or Research Fellow (with a PhD) who can, with the support of others, develop and implement a tea crop model that incorporates nitrogen responses.

You will have experience of developing computer models, an understanding of crop science, and a demonstrated drive to produce high quality reports and papers. This is an exciting position that provides the opportunity to work with a group of experienced and well-motivated researchers and practitioners from the UK and East Africa.

You must have a PhD (or close to completing) focused on crop and/or soil management and modelling or digital agriculture, alongside evidence of a peer-reviewed journal publication record. Experience presenting at national or international conferences, and securing research income is desirable.

As the UK’s only exclusively postgraduate university, Cranfield brings together world-class expertise, large-scale facilities and strong industry partnerships to provide global leadership in technology and management. For the past 50 years, we have been enhancing natural capital and ensuring that food systems are more resilient.  We are recognised worldwide for our research and teaching in agricultural systems and their impact on soil, water and air quality. Our people are our most valuable resource and you can help support the future of our university, develop our learners, and improve the sustainability of international food production.
