The Division of Language & Communication Science in the School of Health Sciences is the largest provider of speech and language therapy education in the UK. It has a strong core of experienced academics with experts in most domains of speech and language therapy, together with leaders from aligned academic subjects including phonetics, linguistics, psychology and audiology. 

The Language & Communication Science Research Centre conducts world-leading research in several specialist areas including developmental and acquired language impairment; deafness; sign language and gesture; speech phonology and linguistics; social disadvantage and quality of life. It has a thriving aphasia research team, with funded projects investigating the benefits of peer support, technological applications in aphasia rehabilitation, the benefits of solution-focused therapy and narrative intervention. Its inclusive and supportive research culture aims to give all staff the opportunity to develop their research careers.

The Division is seeking to appoint a Qualitative Research Fellow to join the LUNA Research Project to interview participants with aphasia following the LUNA treatment to explore participants’ perspectives of feasibility and acceptability. LUNA is a novel discourse treatment targeting personal narratives with people with aphasia. All work is planned to be conducted online, following the impact of COVID-19 on the project.

The appointed candidate will conduct individual interviews with participants online, analyse the data, and support peer-reviewed manuscript for submission reporting on these findings. 

Person Specification
The successful candidate must have a first degree (or equivalent) in Speech & Language Therapy, Linguistics or Psychology, together with a PhD in a relevant discipline. They will be expected to demonstrate enhanced knowledge and skills in qualitative research methods, specifically individual semi-structured interviews and Framework Analysis, and have knowledge and experience of conducting individual interviews with people with aphasia. Experience of coding, charting and analysis of interview data following the Framework Analysis method is also essential.
