About the position

In collaboration with Statnett (the Transmission Systems Operator of Norway) the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical engineering at NTNU announced a newly established position as Associate Professor in Cyber Security with particular focus on cyber security in the power systems.

Automation, digitalization, advanced sensors and communication; these are all part of the solutions for reliable operation and sustainable development of electric power systems. At the same time, the society is increasingly dependent on reliable power supply, partly as a result of the digitalization and electrification trends. This underlines the importance and interdependency between power system security and information security. On this background, the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at NTNU seek to strengthen research and education in this field. This an industry sponsored position created in collaboration with Statnett and is a part of a larger focus area to address the challenges in the power sector. The position is intended to actively contribute to the development of the NTNU – Statnett collaborative interface.

The position is attached to the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology. The department conducts internationally competitive research in several areas of cyber security, information security, communication networks and networked services. The department operates study programs in information security and communication technology at PhD, master and bachelor levels.

The department is also the host and operator of Center for Cyber and Information Security (www.ntnu.no/ccis), a public-private partnership for competence development in cyber and information security. The department is also host for the Norwegian Research Council funded Center for Research-based Innovation NORCICS (Norwegian Center for Cybersecurity in Critical Sectors). Furthermore, the department hosts and coordinates the development of the Norwegian Cyber Range (www.ntnu.no/ncr). The Norwegian Cyber Range is an innovation platform for relevant testing, training, exercise, education and research in the cyber domain and the cyber domains interaction with other domains. The prospective candidate is expected to take an active role in further developing the Department’s teaching and research activities, with a focus on cyber and information security in electric power systems.

The aim of the Digital Electric Energy collaboration is to create synergies between Statnett and NTNU by fully focusing on the knowledge gaps as seen from the power system. The candidate will therefore need to work closely with experts from Statnett and the Department of Electric Power Engineering (www.ntnu.edu/iel), also a department of the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. The two departments are co-located on NTNUs campus Gløshaugen in Trondheim, and Statnett has R&D capacities relevant for the project in Trondheim.

The position reports to the Head of the Department of Information Security and the place of work will be in Trondheim
