Overview

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

In this position a Computer Technician provides computer technical, administrative and general technical support to the Plant Instrumentation & Control group and other internal customers. This includes providing occasional end-user support to scientists and engineers on-demand.

Responsibilities

  • General Linux & MS Windows Computer systems. 25%
  • Data Archiving and Plant Monitoring systems. 15%
  • Drawings and documentation support for the Plant I&C group. 5%
  • Computing, instrumentation & control hardware maintenance. 5%
  • System configuration and replacement tasks. 10%
  • Testing of new Hardware and Software systems. 10%
  • Design, build and deploy computer systems meeting performance guidelines 5%
  • Diagnose and repair computer and electrical failures 5%
  • Maintain Computer Systems and manage configurations 10%
  • Install specialized data acquisition equipment in various locations throughout PPPL 10%

Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  • Entry level for technical institute graduate or AA degree with some relevant experience; or no degree with 2+ years of experience.
  • Linux Administration. 1+ Years
  • Hardware troubleshooting. 1+ Years
  • Familiar with MS Windows

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to work with a diverse set of scientists, engineers and technical staff with varying skill levels and backgrounds is fundamental to this position.
  • Strong organizational skills and communication skills with the ability to present ideas and concerns in a positive and professional manner.
  • Redhat/CentOS Linux administration
  • Troubleshooting Linux SW, user environments
  • Compiling and testing Software
  • Installing Operating Systems and Applications
  • Using configuration management systems

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be able to physically lift, move and install typical rack mountable equipment.
  • The ability to occasionally work in awkward positions by bending, stooping, crawling and climbing ladder should be expected.

Working Conditions: 

  • Office work, electronics lab work, field work
