Department: Psychology and Pedagogic Science
Reports To: Programme Director
Starting Salary: £38,017
Hours: Full time (1.0 FTE)
Term: Permanent

The Faculty of Sport, Allied Health and Performance Science is an internationally recognised centre with established expertise and resources in running foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the areas of sport, allied health and performance sciences.

The Faculty is committed to offering students vocationally relevant programmes of study with the highest academic standards. It has undergone rapid expansion in recent years, with the building of new facilities to support the programmes, and the employment of expert staff in the various fields of psychology, health and sport and exercise science.  All of the Faculty’s teaching and learning activity is underpinned by significant research and enterprise (consultancy/knowledge transfer) work, and staff are actively involved in professional associations.

The successful candidate will be committed to making a significant contribution to teaching and curriculum development on the well-established and highly successful BSc in Psychology degree as well as other degrees offered within the Psychology Programme. The Psychology programme was recently successfully revalidated as well as re-accredited with the BPS.  In addition, the Faculty is actively developing its portfolio of psychology related programmes at both undergraduate and post graduate study.  For 2020-21 as well as the already highly successful BPS accredited BSc Psychology, MSc Psychology of Mental Health and MSc Applied Sport Psychology, we introduced the BSc Sport Psychology (BPS accredited) in September 2019 and are presently considering further undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Psychology.

Job Purpose:

The Psychology Programme at St. Mary’s University is looking for a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join its team. The successful candidate would deliver on our existing undergraduate psychology programmes as well as helping to develop and deliver on our expanding offerings of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (as above).  The candidate will be expected to contribute to the overall psychology content, with particular emphasis and expertise in Social Psychology, as well as experience with Qualitative Research Methods. An interest in contributing to our developing portfolio will be welcomed and there may be opportunities to take on programme leadership activities.

Ideally, the successful candidate is expected to have a BPS GBC accredited first degree in Psychology and a PhD in Psychology (or expected within the next 6 months).  Experience of teaching and assessing in HE is essential, as is a demonstration of engagement with scholarship and research (evidenced by recent publications in peer-reviewed journals). Experience of module leadership and/or development would be welcomed, as would evidence of an ability to generate external income and a teaching qualification (and/or Fellowship of the HEA).

St Mary’s provides an inspiring and welcoming environment and has a strong, supportive community. The University is proud of the support it gives to its students, and the support is underpinned by the provision of teaching that is student-focused with a strong emphasis on skills and character development. At St Mary’s you will be encouraged to nurture and educate our students, preparing them to be ready to meet the challenges of today and anticipate those of tomorrow.

There may be some flexibility regarding the role and interested parties are encouraged to contact the Programme Director Dr Peary Brug (peary.brug@stmarys.ac.uk) or Head of Department, Dr Abbe Brady (abbe.brady@stmarys.ac.uk) to discuss this or other aspects of the role further. To discuss specific aspects of the post please email the Programme Director.

Company

Established in 1850 and with a deep heritage in education, St Mary’s University, Twickenham has a strong reputation for teaching excellence and a student-centred approach.

St Mary’s University is a modern, friendly and welcoming university situated in the leafy borough of Richmond upon Thames and a short train journey away from the hustle and bustle of central London. St Mary’s is on an exciting journey of transformation and growth, to benefit students, staff and the wider St Mary’s community. As the University builds on its proud heritage, it is looking for exceptional people to help shape its progressive future.  Our current strategy, Vision 2025, is focused on people and place, with the aim of creating a positive learning environment centred on our campus.

We are a strong and welcoming community of students and staff and are committed to the highest standards in teaching across our wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. In 2019, we were again awarded Outstanding status by Ofsted and in the 2018 National Student Survey, St Mary’s ranked first in London for Teaching Excellence and Student Experience, contributing to our jump of 56 places in the NSS league table.

We have also seen our second successive significant rise in the Sunday Times Good University Guide. Our rise of 39 places since 2017 positions us as 12th in London and 77th nationality. Other significant league table changes include a rise of 25 places in the 2019 Guardian University Guide league table, to 80th in the UK, and 17 places in the Complete University Guide as a notable climber.

In addition, we have a vibrant culture and environment.

Our core values; inclusiveness, generosity of spirit, respect and excellence underpin all we do as a University and we are actively working to embed these into our daily behaviours.  We want to create the best possible conditions for our students and staff to develop into independent problem solvers and ethical leaders, enthusiastic about knowledge and learning, and able to get things done.

You will find further information on the web pages about our University. If you are excited by the opportunity to join St Mary’s and help us to realise our ambitious plans, then we look forward to hearing from you.
