Job Summary

The position is for a full time Scientific Research Assistant, responsible for piloting a multi-PI and multi-institution collaboration with a large oil company to make a wide range of geochemical and isotopic measurements on small and limited samples. The position includes organizing data from other research groups working on the samples, and to present findings in lectures and publications.

Job Duties

  • Acquire and curate samples from deep wells associated with the Pre-Salt oil play off of Brazil
  • Measure the sulfur isotope ratios in carbonates, pyrites, and organic matter from powders and texture specific samples
  • Study other aspects of the geochemistry of the samples, including light microscopy, scanning XRF, and SIMS measurements
  • Organize all of the data from the many groups into a useable database
  • Lead data interpretation of the sulfur and other geochemical data
  • Work with geologists and geophysicists to interpret the data
  • Compare the Pre-Salt system with other similar known systems to develop viable analogs
  • Write papers and reports as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in geochemistry or related field with 3 or more year of experience
  • Familiarity with how Oil companies do goal-oriented research
  • Background in sulfur isotope measurements by a variety of techniques
  • Able to work independently in a geochemistry lab

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some Post-Doc experience 
  • Direct experience with oil company research 
  • Understanding of Pre-Salt stratigraphy and possible analogs
  • Skills as an isotope Geochemist
