The School of Medicine and Public Health is the largest of four Schools within the Faculty of Health and Medicine. The School's educational strengths are the Bachelor of Medical Science/Doctor of Medicine – Joint Medical Program (JMP) and postgraduate programs in public health. The School also has a strong research focus and works closely with the CCLHD to promote health research focused on population needs and health services within this locality. The research and educational programs have robust international links and opportunities, and the potential for growth of interprofessional learning and research. The Central Coast Clinical School (CCCS) is core to the JMP, coordinating clinical teaching and supervision for medical students across key clinical Disciplines in hospital, community and primary care settings. From 2022 it is anticipated that students will be placed at the CCCS across all five years of the curriculum.

With a strong focus on Integrated Health Care and the health priorities of CCLHD this position will work collaboratively with the Clinical Dean at the CCCS to achieve growth and sustainability of the medical education program and foster a strong partnership with CCLHD.

This is a fixed term position for three years and is based at the CCCS located at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals.

How will you inspire us?

Contributing towards three domains of academic work within the School of Medicine and Public Health: Research and Innovation, Teaching and Learning, and Service and Engagement, you will be responsible for the teaching and assessment of undergraduate medical students, while contributing to the ongoing review of the medical program.

As a key member of an academic team based within the CCCS, you will work collaboratively with the Clinical Dean to achieve growth and sustainability of the teaching and research programs, and to foster strong relationships with all JMP delivery partners.

In this role, you will undertake clinical academic duties and provide clinical academic leadership within a relevant professional discipline, with preference given to clinicians in the discipline of Geriatrics.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Lecturer in Medicine will contribute towards the three domains of academic work within the School of Medicine and Public Health: Research and Innovation, Teaching and Learning, and Service and Engagement, in line with the Performance Expectations Framework (PEF) for Academic staff.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching and assessment of undergraduate medical students, while contributing to the ongoing review of the medical program and participating in research and administrative duties appropriate to the appointment level.

This position will be based at the Central Coast Clinical School (CCCS) of the Joint Medical Program (JMP), located at Gosford and Wyong Hospitals; teaching hospitals for the CCLHD and the University of Newcastle. The main location fort this role will be Gosford Hospital.

CCLHD is in a stage of substantial growth in health research and education, with the establishment of the Central Coast Clinical School and Central Coast Research Institute, and the development of the Health and Wellbeing Precinct. Moreover, there will be strong links with academic educators and researchers at the University. There is a strong focus on Integrated Health Care and the health priorities of CCLHD. The 5-year undergraduate medical program (Joint Medical Program (JMP)) is a unique partnership between the University of Newcastle, the University of New England and the Hunter New England and Central Coast Local Health Districts. In 2017 the JMP commenced the double degree program (Bachelor of Medical Science/Doctor of Medicine), following substantial revision of the existing Bachelor of Medicine course. The innovative new program maintains early and broad clinical experience, an integrated problem-based learning curriculum alongside enhanced opportunities for research in public health and longitudinal electives in global health. The JMP offers the opportunity to practise in urban, regional, rural and remote Australia through participating in a program of international standing and is an Australian first. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to this program, through teaching, participation in program leadership roles and undertaking innovative programs in medical education.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) or equivalent.
  • Postgraduate degree (PhD) or equivalent accreditation or working towards same.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in a higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement in medical education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to engagement and collaboration with clinicians and health services towards improvements in health care.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and bring together people from different areas to participate in School or University wide initiatives.
