Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest science faculty in Finland. There are some 6,000 students taking a basic degree. Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. This project is in collaboration with Airmodus Ltd. Airmodus develops, manufactures and sells instruments and sampling systems for counting of airborne nanoparticles. Unique 1 nm measurement solutions to universities and research institutes; niche R&D and certification instruments for vehicle, industrial engine and aftertreatment industries for the measurements of emissions (e.g. EURO 6 certification or break emissions); and aerosol particle monitoring systems for research-oriented air quality authorities. Faculty of Science invites applications for
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER to an industry-academia collaboration project in experimental aerosol research starting from January 2021 for a fixed-term employment contract with the duration of 24 months.
The postdoctoral researcher will work in a Tandem Industry-Academia project funded by the Finnish Research Impact Foundation. He/she will work 12 months in the Atmospheric Aerosols group at INAR (helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/atmospheric-aerosols) and 12 months at Airmodus Ltd. The work contract is with University of Helsinki.
The research project aims at improving the sampling of sub-10 nm aerosol particles and understanding the physical and chemical phenomena affecting neutral and charged nanoparticles during sampling. The tasks comprise of laboratory measurements using state-of-the art instrumentation, a detailed characterization of the performance of the Airmodus new sampling device (AND) and investigating the use of AND in industrial applications.

Ideal candidates are required to have:

• a doctoral degree in atmospheric sciences, aerosol research, engineering or related disciplines
• strong experimental skills (experience in laboratory or field measurements or instrument development), preferably within aerosol technology. Experience working with PSM, CPCs, high-resolution DMAs and mass spectrometers is a plus
• systematic working habits and a “can do” attitude
• proficiency in spoken and written English
• ability and enthusiasm to cooperate with the private sector (please detail in the cover letter how you would benefit from industry-academia collaboration and what you could bring to such collaboration)

Working language is English. The starting salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be ca. 3300–3700 euros/month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience.
