About the position

The Department of geography has a temporary position available as PhD Candidate in ‘Studies of networks of innovative organizations and/or sustainable value chains’.

The PhD-position is a temporary position for a period of three years. The position is an educational position that shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD.

The position is connected to the PhD-program at the Faculty of Social and Educational Science, specializing in geography, and the faculty will be your employer. You will be a part of a growing research environment in economic geography, innovation and sustainability transition studies at the Department of Geography.

You will report to Head of Department.

Duties of the position

The candidate will be involved in the multidisciplinary Centre for Research-based Innovation in ‘Manufacturing’. The primary objective of the centre is: The establishment of a permanent centre for cross-disciplinary research-based innovation to contribute to Norwegian Manufacturing Industry's innovation capability and global competitiveness. The centre is funded by the Research Council of Norway, 15 industry partners, NTNU, SINTEF (2 departments involved) and SINTEF Manufacturing is the host institution. See https://www.sfimanufacturing.no/. The Department of Geography participates in this centre and contributes within the research area titled ‘Innovative and Sustainable Organizations’.

The PhD-position will be organized within one of two work packages:

  • WP3.4 Future manufacturing organization models
    The objective is to test and demonstrate a methodology for assessing trends and building scenarios in companies aiming for strategy development
  • WP3.5 Sustainable business model development
    The objective is to demonstrate the integration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in business model development, with emphasize on circular material streams

The PhD is expected to

  • use relevant theoretical perspectives (i.e. global production networks, global value chains, innovation systems, sustainable transitions, and circular economy)
  • study how manufacturing firms, related organizations, and institutions work and collaborate together to promote innovation/environmental upgrading
  • account for the implications of these activities for regional industrial development

Required selection criteria

The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is that you have completed a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in social sciences with a strong academic background from the discipline of human geography, innovation or sustainable transition studies or equivalent education with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic foundation. If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

You must also have good written and oral English.

Preferred selection criteria

It is beneficial that you have skills in Norwegian language or another Scandinavian language.

You should have good skills in conducting social research on industry, in qualitative methodology, including case study design and in academic writing.

We offer

Salary and conditions

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 479 600 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Social Sciences, specializing in geography  within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
