About the position

The Department of Chemical Engineering has a vacancy for a PhD student within the field of nanomedicine. The earliest start date for the position will be November 2020.

The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of a further 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.

Project Description

The cross-disciplinary project Nano-Medicine Initiative: Functional Nanoparticles in Medicine, funded by NTNU Health, NTNU Rectorate, Faculty of Natural Sciences (NV) and Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MH) aims to synthesize and tailor-make nanoparticles for a wide range of biomedical applications including diagnostic testing of various diseases such as microbial infections, cardiovascular diseases and cancer by detection of antibodies, proteins, nucleic acids and metabolites. The focus is to develop real-time high throughput strategies for diagnosis. The technology developed in these projects can also be applied in other sectors such as agriculture, aqua culture and food industry. The project further aims to develop understanding of the growth mechanisms of nanoparticles in batch and continuous processes to obtain a better control of particle size and size distribution.

Thematic Area: Continuous methods for production of nanoparticles such as using nanoprecipitation, flash nanoprecipitation, flow - through processes and study of in-situ functionalization. Testing of these nanoparticles for diagnostic applications (in collaboration with a PhD candidate and a Post Doc to be hired in the same project).

Duties of the position

The research work will involve:

  • Synthesis and functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles.
  • Characterization using state-of-the art infrastructure at NTNU NanoLab and laboratories in Department of Chemical Engineering.
  • Continuous methods for production of coated nanoparticles.
  • In situ and one pot functionalization strategies
  • Statistical analysis of datasets.

The candidate is expected to participate actively in the group activities, including mentoring and co-supervision of students. More information about the group can be found here: http://folk.ntnu.no/bandyopa/

The candidate is expected to be flexible in regard to short-term or long-term international research stays.

Travelling with respect to conferences, meetings, workshops may be expected as part of the position.

If you are unable to meet these criteria you may be considered only if you can document that you are particularly suitable for education leading to a PhD degree.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant.

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong experimental background in synthesis and functionalization of nanomaterials via bottom-up approaches.
  • Experience in characterization techniques such as electron microscopy, spectroscopy, light scattering, etc.
  • Solid background in data and/or statistical analysis.
  • A willingness to design and build equipment and scientific instruments.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in flow chemistry will be an advantage.
  • Good written and oral English language skills
