We are seeking two energetic and enthusiastic postdoctoral researchers to work on an ESCEL Joint Undertaking project, in the area of verification and validation of automated systems. The project titled VALU3S (Verification and Validation of Automated Systems’ Safety and Security) is concerned with the design, implementation and evaluation of state-of-the-art verification and validation methods and tools, with the aim of reducing the time and cost needed to verify and validate automated systems with respect to safety, cybersecurity and privacy requirements.
Thirteen use cases with specific safety, security and privacy requirements will be studied in the VALU3S project. The methods investigated will be used to design improved process workflows for verification and validation of automated systems. Tools will be implemented to support the improved processes which are evaluated using demonstrators. VALU3S will influence the development of safety, security and privacy standards, and will provide guidelines on how the verification and validation of automated systems could be improved considering the cost, time and effort of conducting software testing.
VALU3S brings together a consortium with partners from 10 different countries, with a mix of industrial partners (25 partners) from automotive, agriculture, railway, healthcare, aerospace and industrial automation and robotics domains as well as leading research institutes (6 partners) and universities (10 partners) one of which is Maynooth University. To ensure that VALU3S technology is applicable to complex aircraft evaluation cases, Maynooth University are participating in multiple work packages in this project and collaborating directly with United Technologies Research Centre Ireland (UTRCI) to work on an aerospace use case. This use case consists of an aircraft engine model coupled with an engine controller, the safety and performance of which will be analysed under the presence of various kinds of faults in different flight phases. Examples of these faults include sensor faults, engine mechanical failures, abrupt changes in operating environment and network delays in the case of distributed control. Prior to analysis, a mapping of fault types to relevant flight phases will be performed, in order to limit the corresponding evaluation scenarios to a tractable but at the same time realistic set.
The engine use case will start by developing models of conventional aircraft engines using existing state-of-the-art tools for modelling engine cycles, airflow, fuel dynamics and air compression. In parallel, we will evaluate existing physical modelling tools used in engine design, and investigate the interaction between cyber models. The objectives of the use case are to evaluate the VALU3S technologies in an industrial setting for the independent aircraft components controlling the engine subsystems, combining a multidomain analysis including fault and attack injection on the constituent co-models.
We are appointing two post-doctoral researchers to our team to work on this use case. The successful candidates will work with academic and industry-based researchers, both in Ireland and internationally. The post advertised here will be for up to 28 months, depending on start date, with an anticipated commencement month of October 2020.
Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale: €37,874 per annum
Appointment will be made in accordance with the Department of Finance pay guidelines.
