Position Focus:

We are seeking a full time Lab Coordinator for a lab within the Department of Neuroscience at the Yale School of Medicine. The lab focuses on understanding the cellular events and molecular mechanisms that govern development of the mammalian central nervous system. The lab uses a variety of in vivo and in vitro techniques including, but not limited to, molecular biology, histology, immunohistology, imaging, and microscopy. The lab uses and maintains a NHP breeding colony as well as different lines of mice. Additional species (e.g. rats, ferrets) or even human tissue and different types of cell lines, depending on the goals of any study, may also be used.

The main responsibilities of the Lab Coordinator will be:

To proactively keep the lab in working order by assuring maintenance of laboratory space and instruments and a clean and safe environment in compliance with all regulations. Assure timely reporting and respond to regulatory issues. Maintain compliance with all university, local, state and federal related rules and regulations. Oversee safety and respond to routine and unscheduled laboratory inspections including those by EHS, IACUC, OARS state and federal agencies.

Be responsible for and order all consumables and maintain a working inventory of lab supplies in a cost-effective manner. Maintain inventory of refrigerators and freezers and their contents. Order animals. Avoid duplication of supplies and promote sharing of supplies among investigators including chemicals and antibodies. Manage service contracts.

To assist lab scientists to process, obtain, document and organize data and perform laboratory tasks as instructed by the scientists. The successful candidate will be responsible for wet lab work as well as direct work with animals. The lab coordinator will prepare solutions, and perform histology, immunohistology, and immunoblotting.

Plan, organize and attend laboratory meetings and establish and maintain laboratory communications as needed for the PI and lab members. Be available in the lab.

Essential Duties

  1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/ scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments.
  2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques.
  3. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  4. Formulates and prepares scientific solutions and media. Recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.
  5. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May oversee and instruct research staff.
  6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability working with laboratory animals (including rodents). Willingness and ability to learn new techniques including working with NHP's.
Familiarity with good laboratory practices and compliance with regulatory issues (EHS, IACUC, OARS, FDA, etc.)

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Familiarity with and ability to operate common laboratory instruments including: analytical balances, pH meters, centrifuges, -80 freezers, ice maker, basic microscopes, ovens, different types of sterilizer machines including an autoclave, etc.  

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to prepare solutions and perform basic histology. A steady hand and ability to do fine detail work is required for immunohistology.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

​Familiarity with online tools for purchasing and shipping. Fluency with Microsoft Word and Excel, or similar programs.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Good organization skills and attention to detail. Ability to multitask. Proven history of taking initiative to solve problems. Dependability, excellent attendance and punctuality record.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

2+ yrs of college in neuroscience or related areas. Experience in cutting/processing tissue for histology & immunohistochemistry, Experience working with NHP's, Golgi staining as well as familiarity with Western blots, microscopy & stereology. Basic understanding of brain anatomy, and principles of animal behavioral testing. Basic understanding of cell cultures & their maintenance.
