THE NEW INSTITUTE is an Institute of Advanced Study and a platform for shaping social change based in Hamburg, Germany. It was initiated in response to the most pressing ecological, economic, and political challenges of the 21st century to work towards viable solutions to the most urgent questions of our time. Committed to a research approach that is interdisciplinary and bridges multiple sectors, THE NEW INSTITUTE is founded on academic rigour and innovative practice. It brings together a community of globally conscious researchers, thought and opinion leaders, activists, entrepreneurs, policy-makers, and journalists, all of whom work together towards the same objective: to inform, inspire, and implement societal change. The Institute will host up to 35 fellows as of the fall of 2021. For more information on THE NEW INSTITUTE, please visit thenew.institute.

THE NEW INSTITUTE invites applications for

Fellowships on “The Foundations of Value and Values”

from across the globe. Fellowships will be awarded for a duration of up to two years (preferably starting in the fall of 2021).

The Foundations of Value and Values

This programme aims to explore the idea of value-driven transformations towards more sustainable futures. Before looking at the necessary conditions for changes to be sustainable, we need to look at the following questions: How do new values emerge? Where does value come from in current society?  What are features of our economic and political systems that allow people to develop and articulate their values and to strive for a life in line with them? THE NEW INSTITUTE invites projects looking at values as taking a central role in shaping behaviour and driving social change. We invite applications by researchers, artists and journalists, who work on topics related to the four sets of guiding questions as outlined in the information for applicants (https://thenew.institute/en/what/value-and-values).

Whom are we looking for?

We are looking for candidates who identify with the Institute’s aspiration to contribute to social, economic, and ecological transformation. Candidates should also have an ability to bring transformative ideas to THE NEW INSTITUTE'S work, strive to advance knowledge, and to turn research results into action. Ideally, they have already engaged with networks beyond their expertise. Applicants must be highly willing to work in interdisciplinary and trans-sectoral settings. Good knowledge of English is necessary.

What do we expect?

Fellows will be resident at THE NEW INSTITUTE in Hamburg
