Description
The Department of Physiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for a Research Associate position in the Academic Support Staff. This appointment will be initially for one (1) year and continuation during that time period and renewal are based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding (limited to three (3) years). Expertise is required in the specific area of fluorescent microscopy, atomic force microscopy, single cell myocyte mechanical characterization, myocardial mechanical assays, and computational modelling. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree.

Responsibilities may include development of biomechanical assays to assess the viscoelastic properties of isolated myocytes and myocardium, assist with viscoelastic measurements by atomic force microscopy, and perform combined fluorescent microscopy and mechanical measurements. The successful candidate will excel at teaching and oversight of undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral trainees in the field of biomechanics, while planning, conducting, analyzing and communicating basic and translational research in the area of cardiac pathology toward the development of therapies for cardiac pathophysiology.

The successful applicant will have an opportunity to develop an independently guided research program in the area of cardiovascular muscle mechanics while assisting with the ongoing research efforts within the lab of Dr. Benjamin Prosser. The applicant is required to have an expert understanding of muscle physiology, solid mechanics, and computational techniques that will be used in the lab to decipher the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying mechanical changes in cardiac pathophysiology.
