Job Summary

The position is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day coaching of the softball program.  The Assistant Coach will work closely with the Head Coach and athletic administration to promote Harvard Athletics¿ mission of academic integration, competitive excellence, and principled leadership in Division I athletics.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

The main duties of the position include assisting in the instruction of student-athletes both in-person and virtually. 

Under the direction of the Head Coach, you will help run the inter-collegiate Softball program at Harvard, including oversight of Recruiting.  You will help instruct and develop student athletes; evaluate skills in person and virtually; assist in making strategic decisions in contest situations; oversee the strength and conditioning of the athletes; assist in developing and implementing the overall recruiting strategy of prospective student athletes in accordance with NCAA and Ivy League rules; and handle administrative responsibilities associated with the program operations, including recruiting logistics and planning, team travel details, and equipment ordering.  You will also assist in fundraising efforts and running special events.

Secondary duties for this position will include assisting in the operational management of the program and with various administrative duties associated with running the program. 

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required plus at least one year of softball coaching experience.  Knowledge of NCAA Division I softball rules.  Basic video filming and editing skills required. 

Additional Qualifications

Offensive or defensive expertise is preferred.  Outstanding sport specific technical, tactical and strategic knowledge.  Ability to break down, analyze and synthesize film to use in practices with student athletes.  Understanding of Harvard and the Ivy League and the role that athletics plays within the University is helpful.

Basic proficiency in Excel, Google documents and Microsoft Word, internet and email

Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to relate with constituencies outside of the Dept of Athletics (Deans, Admissions, alumnae, parents) as well as Department administration and other coaches. Ability to work in accordance with the rules set forth by Harvard, the Ivy League and NCAA.

Evening and weekend work required.  CPR and First Aid certifications required.  Must be able to lift equipment associated with the sport. 

A DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) check is required because you will be driving recruits as well as student-athletes during out-of-town travel.  

Ability and willingness to work in extreme weather conditions (heat, rain, cold).

Physical Requirements

Ability to throw front toss, hit ground balls and flyballs is necessary; ability to pitch batting practice is helpful.
