At TU Dresden, Faculty of Computer Science. Institute of Artificial Intelligence, the Junior Research Group Logic Programming and Argumentation to be newly founded offers two positions as

Research Associate / PhD Student / Postdoc

(Subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

within the BMBF project „Navas - Navigation Approaches for Answer Sets” starting as soon as possible. The positions are fixed-term until 30.9.2024. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The positions offer the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. Ph.D. or habilitation thesis). Balancing family and career is an important issue. The posts are basically suitable for candidates seeking part-time employment. A part-time employment of 50% of the fulltime weekly hours is possible. The project Navas is dedicated to develop interactive and transparent navigation approaches for answer sets in order to make answer set programming (ASP) technology more accessible to the public. We are researching a foundational and applicable theory to make the ASP approach more explainable, in particular to provide an interactive interface to explore the solution space of answer sets.

Tasks: As a member of the project Navas, you will be researching new methods in the area of Answer Set Programming with application to Argumentation Theory and Configuration. You will be working on one or several of the following tasks: Theoretical foundations like Complexity Analysis; Development of navigation strategies for answer sets; Visualisation techniques for answer set navigation; Prototypical implementation and empirical evaluation. The position is focused on foundational research. Publication and presentation of research results at international venues is an important part of the work.

Requirements: We are looking for motivated and talented staff members with a very good university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in computer science or a related area, if applicable a PhD, and with firm background knowledge in one or more of the following topics:

  • Artificial Intelligence, especially Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
  • Logic Programming, Answer-Set Programming
  • Argumentation Theory, Abstract Argumentation
  • Combinatorial Search Problems, Configuration Problems

Postdocs should have made significant research contributions to one of the above areas. Candidates should be independent in organising their work, keen on working with teams of experts of project partners, and fluent in English, oral and written.
