Job Summary

The Shapiro Laboratory at Caltech develops bio-molecular technologies for non-invasive imaging and control of cellular function inside living organisms to facilitate basic biology research and the development of cell-based diagnostic and therapeutic agents. We are seeking a Laboratory Research Manager experienced with small animal research to join our team and help us accomplish this mission. The Laboratory Research Manager will report directly to Professor Shapiro, conducting independent and collaborative experiments involving molecular and cellular imaging and control in vivo and supporting the faculty PI in the operational management of the research group. The successful candidate will be an integral member of the research team, alongside postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and is expected to be a co-author on scientific publications.

Job Duties

  • Performs scientific research that includes small animal procedures, such as oral gavage, IV, SC, IP injections, intracranial surgery and imaging using ultrasound and magnetic resonance.
  • Performs scientific research that includes techniques such as tissue histology, optical microscopy, cell culture and molecular biology.
  • Is expected to be an author on scientific publications.
  • Supports faculty PI in the operational management of the research group. Interprets and ensures compliance with Institute policies, scientific research protocols and federal regulations. Serves as a resource on compliance for all research group scientists, students and staff.
  • Manages animal protocols. Serves as the laboratory’s primary contact with our Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Office of Laboratory Animal Resources. Leads the development and updating of IACUC protocols. Prepares and maintains IACUC and biosafety protocols. Trains group members on practices related to animal and biosafety protocols.
  • Serve as the laboratory Safety Officer, interfacing with Caltech’s Environment, Health and Safety office and the Institutional Biosafety Committee. Prepares and maintains group safety protocols and instructs laboratory members on appropriate practices to ensure a safe, productive and happy environment. Conducts routine laboratory inspections, and conducts routine safety training.
  • Manages laboratory equipment inventory. Ensures that equipment undergoes routine maintenance. Makes recommendations regarding equipment upgrades and replacement. Works with the Division’s property services to ensure that equipment is tracked according to Institute policy.
  • Supervises work-study students. Provides day-to-day direction, and monitors performance. Creates and maintains documentation (e.g. protocols) for assignments. Monitors compliance with Institute policies governing work hour limits for students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in Biology, Biomedical Engineering or related field. Candidates with a PhD or veterinary degree are also welcome to apply.
  • Passion for breakthrough research and desire to learn new things.
  • 3 or more years’ experience with small animal laboratory research in academia or industry.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting experimental data.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent decision making; ability to prioritize work according to urgency, multitask and work under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to master new material and to adapt to changes in workflow and requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Lab management experience.
