Title: Special Scientist (BIMS and EDC operation officer)

The Molecular Medicine Research Center of the University of Cyprus has one opening for a Special Scientist, funded by the research program: Biobanking and the Cyprus Human Genome Project (CY-Biobank), which is co-funded by the European Commission, the Republic of Cyprus and the University of Cyprus.


  • Setup and operate of Biobank Information Management Systems (BIMS)
  • Setup and operate of Electronic Data Capturing (EDC)
  • Setup and operate of laboratory automation
  • Setup and operate of assisting software, as e.g. Databases, Phenotips, Molgenis, etc
  • Improve and streamline the deployment process
  • Design, build and maintain core infrastructure pieces that will allow CY-Biobank to scale accordingly
  • Debug production issues across services
  • Document every action so the findings turn into repeatable actions–and then into automation
  • Be responsible for data backup and software maintenance
  • Be on a rotation duty to respond to CY-Biobank availability incidents (including hardware and network issues with the help of university ICT) and provide first level support for researchers or collaborators


  • BSc in Computer Science or a relative field (e.g. Mathematics, Statistics, etc.)
  • A Master or PhD degree in a relative field will be considered as an advantage
  • Knowledge of Biobank Information Management Systems (BIMS) including sample management and laboratory automation will be considered as an advantage
  • Knowledge of Electronic Data Capturing (EDC) solutions
  • Knowledge of database systems (SQL, ETL processes)
  • Experienced around Linux and the Unix Shell
  • Strong documentation skills - follow DRY principles
  • Have an urge for delivering quickly and iterating fast
  • Basic programing skills, e.g. python
  • Good English knowledge in spoken and written

Terms of employment

The position will be for full-time employment with a 2-year contract, and potential for renewal. The gross monthly salary will be commensurate to qualifications and previous experience and ranges between €1500 and €3000. There is no provision for a 13th salary.
