Position Focus:

Provides individualized and diagnostic teaching, guidance and positive behavior interventions for the students at the Cedarhurst School. Participates in the formulation of an "Individualized Education Program" for each student developing goals and objectives and implementing/evaluating regularly. Prepares daily instructional plans and materials consistent with subject matter and in accordance with state standards of teaching. Revises and updates curricula based on individual needs, instructs students in groups or individually using a variety of teaching techniques.

Demonstrates ability to utilize technology to provide synchronous learning. Utilizes the school wide universal PBIS system for behavior management including a token economy highlighting good choices and provides positive feedback. Analyzes classroom situations and acts accordingly using sound judgement. Communicates regularly with parents on student progress. Participates in the CT teacher evaluation program for professional growth and development as well as professional development activities scheduled. Works collaboratively with social work and behavioral staff communication concerns to address cognitive and social emotional issues. Ensures matters pertaining to the protection of the student rights are brought to the attention of the Director and clinical staff.

Essential Duties

1. Participates in the formulation of an Individualized Educational Program for each student. 2. Analyzes each student's specific academic and affective needs based on the student's social behavior, academic performance, previous histories (personal, academic, family). 3. Establishes academic goals; devises teaching strategies to achieve goals, evaluates and revises goals and strategies on an ongoing basis. 4. Presents Individualized Educational Program to representatives of local school boards. 5. Prepares daily instructional plans and materials consistent with subject matter, varying skill levels, particular modes of learning and different affective needs. 6. Adjusts and revises curricula based on the individual needs and range of needs in each class group. 7. Instructs students in groups or individually utilizing a variety of teaching techniques. 8. Provides a stimulating classroom environment; maintains student interest; minimizes distractions; enforces discipline. 9. Establishes achievable goals and objectives; provides positive reinforcement. 10. Analyzes classroom situations, assesses students' clinical states and as a result of these judgments, acts accordingly with a limited and often time crisis time frame. 11. Observes, assess and communicates students' behavior and cognitive and emotional problems to clinical staff. 12. Implements behavior management plans for all students based on assessments of students social-emotional functioning. 13. Evaluates student’s academic performance and progress relative to individualized goals. Advises and counsels select students in matters primarily related to academics, and secondarily on other related problems. Communicates evaluation and problems to clinical staff. 14. Reviews and evaluates curriculum on an ongoing basis. Recommends modifications in methods and materials. Ensures that matters pertaining to the protection of student rights are brought to the attention of the Director and Clinical Staff. 15. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education required and three years teaching experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to submit timely reporting on lesson planning, report cards, IEPs, other related educational materials.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated experience as a special education teacher.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Proficient technology skills.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to work with a team.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Master's Degree.
  • Required Licenses or CertificationsConnecticut State Certification in Special Education.
  • Preferred Licenses or Certifications:
  • CT teaching certification in Comprehensive Special Education Grades PreK - 12, K- 12, DMV endorsement for driving school vehicles.
