Position Focus:

This position reports directly to the Principal Investigator in the Department of Microbial Pathogenesis and is responsible for the supervision and management of lab assistant(s) as well as the daily operation of labs at two locations. The candidate will perform and function independently as a senior lab manager and provide direct support for all research projects, protocols, and publications. The candidate will manage all research and operational needs, including: Environmental Health and Safety, State Inspections, Facilities, lab assets and services, information technology, material transfer contracts, protocols, regulatory compliance, research databases, shipping, and external collaborations. The candidate may also, with guidance, conduct genetic screenings in bacteria to uncover protein-protein interactions using the Bacterial Two Hybrid (BATCH) system and identify genetic determinants of critical physiological processes using theInSeq platform as needed. The candidate will also write, prepare, and edit content and data visualization for scientificreports, papers, and presentations and coordinate all lab communications(print, technical, and digital).

  • Independently evaluates andcontributes original ideas to the development of complex research projects andscientific content in research proposals, manuscripts, andpublished reports.
  • Collaborates with PI to defineresearch endeavors and the design of research approaches and priorities.Participates in lab meetings and research planning and analyzesscientific conclusions.
  • Solves complex protocol,procedural, and research problems through design of procedures and policies toachieve research goals.
  • Develops and implements longrange plans for supplies and equipment to ensure smooth lab operation andinstitutional compliance.
  • Analyzes and evaluates complexdata and data collection systems to ensure the integrity of research data.Maintains detailed and accurate records to ensure dataresults are compiled, analyzed and presented accurately and professionally.
  • Manages all research data collection, files, and sharing.
  • Coordinates all lab renovations,moves, and/or research support needs by working with Facilities, Health andSafety, Purchasing, IACUC, YARC, institutes (e.g., MSI)and core centers to ensure deadlines, safety and purchases are according toplans and budgets.
  • Prepares and provides content forand substantive editing of scientific reports, protocols, talks, paperspublished in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Trains, supervises, and supportslab assistant(s). Provides training for research staff. Provides feedback to PIregarding performance evaluation of research staff.
  • May perform other dutiesas assigned.

Essential Duties

  1. Compares protocols and sponsored projects to confirm consistency between funding proposals/awards and approved protocols.
  2. Documents established congruency between funding proposals and approved protocols.
  3. Facilitates and/or assists with resolution of any inconsistencies between funding proposals and approved protocols.
  4. Serves as a liaison between the Grants and Contracts offices, investigators, and business managers to resolve congruency issues in a timely manner.
  5. Attends meetings and presents issues when necessary that were identified during congruency review.
  6. Serves as a resource and provides technical assistance to investigators and their staff.
  7. Provides analytical and technical support related to establishing and recording protocol/grant congruency, as needed.
  8. Monitors federal and state regulations for new guidance, updates, or policies. Maintains a high degree of knowledge on these requirements to determine actions and follow directives that may be required to ensure University compliance with congruency review and reporting requirements.
  9. Develops, implements, and manages internal practices that ensure compliance with federal requirements.
  10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant academic/scientific field and a minimum of 3 years of related research support experience; or the equivalent combination of education or experience.

Ability to work independently and function as a member of a team including faculty, students, and trainees.

Proven experience supporting research in a university environment. Familiarity with laboratory, biological and chemical safety conduct of research.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Well-developed verbal and written communication skills. Exceptional organizational skills.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Experience managing and/or teaching in a university or research environment. Experience writing and/or editing academic and research content. Familiarity with scientific literature related to bacterial gene regulation. Ability to work with and support diverse students and professionals. Familiarity with Yale.
