About the School of Humanities

The School of Humanities in Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, was established in 2017 and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programmes in Chinese, English, History, Linguistics & Multilingual Studies and Philosophy. It also offers the Minor in Creative Writing, which is unique only to NTU in Singapore.

A dynamic hub of research excellence in the humanities supported by a world-class faculty, the School of Humanities provides a rigorous and holistic education to develop students into well-rounded individuals who are able to think critically and articulate their ideas clearly and confidently.

Job Descriptions:

  • To perform detailed orthographic and phonetic transcription of language archive
  • To conduct library search on research
  • Collect and process speech data on Singapore’s languages
  • To manage existing databases on Singapore’s languages
  • Run perception experiments
  • To sort and categorise data according to sociolinguistics parameters
  • To extract data from archive in a coherent manner to answer specific research questions
  • To perform basis statistical analysis on data
  • Managing a linguistic research lab, handling bookings by end-users in the unit

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Basic understanding of research and analytical skills Attention to details and procedures
  • Effective communication and report writing skills
  • Requires phonetic skills to do detailed transcription
  • Collect and process speech data on Singapore’s languages
  • Run perception experiments
  • Ability to sort and categorise data according to sociolinguistics parameters
  • Ability to extract data in a coherent manner to answer specific research questions
  • Ability to execute basic statistical analysis
  • Linguistics and data analysis skills

The prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Postdoctoral Fellowship (LKY PDF) was established in 1991 under the Lee Kuan Yew Endowment Fund. The Fellowship supports and promotes young and outstanding researchers to realise their full potential in the areas of Engineering, Science, Humanities, and Medicine.

The Fellowship will be awarded concurrently with the candidate's appointment as a research staff in NTU.

Eligibility: 

• Excellent academic records and research potential.
• Recent PhD graduates, or with at most 1 postdoctoral training from a reputable university. 

Terms and Conditions: 
• The Fellowship will be tenable for a period of 3 years.  
• In addition to an attractive remuneration, the successful candidate will be awarded a research grant of S$180,000 for research consumables and research related expenditure.
