The Department in collaboration with the Centre for Veterinary Wildlife Studies seeks an experienced veterinarian to join our dynamic team to mainly focus on wildlife research.
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
- Develop and undertake research projects related to veterinary wildlife medicine and/or conservation science;
- Publication of research in national and international scientific journals;
- Postgraduate training and supervision of masters and doctoral students;
- Obtaining research grants and contribute to fundraising and third-stream income;
- Limited teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in wildlife related topics;
- Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
- Community engagement;
- Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Centre Director and Head of Department;
- Academic self-development and data presentation at congresses.
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or an equivalent professional veterinary qualification and registered with the SAVC, and if not, be able to register within 2 years;
- An appropriate PhD in a relevant applied area of veterinary wildlife medicine or conservation science;
- A proven research and publications track record including:
- Eight or more full research-based peer-reviewed publications, preferably recent and related to relevant areas of applied veterinary wildlife medicine and/or conservation science;
- At least three first author full research-based peer-reviewed publications;
- Involvement as a supervisor or co-supervisor of Masters and/or PhD students;
- Demonstrate the potential to become an established independent researcher and competent lecturer within the near future;
- Experience in grantmanship;
- Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Postgraduate knowledge in relevant areas related to veterinary wildlife medicine and/or conservation science;
- Good language, communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills;
- Critical analytical and thinking ability;
- Generic research and teaching competence such as communication and presentation, basic statistical, word-processing, spreadsheets and social networking skills.
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
- Registration as a specialist with the SAVC;
- Research and teaching activities in an appropriate academic institution
- Research support and/or clinical experience in zoological/conservation medicine or wildlife health management;
- National Research Foundation (NRF) rating as a research scientist, or eligibility to apply for a rating;
- Demonstrate the ability to do cross-cutting research in relevant areas including: ethical (welfare), sustainable (economics) and safe (public health) wildlife utilization for the purpose of improving conservation efforts, growing the wildlife economy and helping with poverty alleviation; and/or the effects of climate change on wildlife health and welfare; and/or conservation medicine related to improving animal and human health and welfare.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
