We are looking for an enthusiastic individual preferably with mammalian oocyte meiosis research background to join the Laboratory of Dr. Binyam Mogessie in the School of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences as a Research Technician.

Working as part of a team researching meiosis in mammalian oocytes, you will provide essential day-to-day operational support for a designated oocyte laboratory within the Biomedical Sciences Building. You will also assist with live cell imaging and recording of activity records.

You should have experience of working in a biomedical sciences research preferably in a mammalian oocyte biology laboratory environment, with an understanding of oocyte meiosis and techniques such as microinjection, mRNA synthesis and ovarian tissue dissection. You will also have an enthusiasm and a desire to provide high quality technical support for research purposes. Schedule 1 competence is preferred.

You will provide support and assistance for research staff, setting up microinjection systems and live imaging experiments, and ensuring microscopy and dissection equipment is ready to use. Monitor stocks of standard laboratory reagents (e.g. water, PBS, oocyte culture media), prepare additional quantities using standard protocols as required. Ensure laboratory stocks of consumables are maintained in the research laboratories, maintaining Filemaker plasmids database, arranging for the disposal of solvent waste etc, and that appropriate records are kept. You will Interact with and provide basic support and training to students conducting research studies or projects.

Working with the research team, you will work to ensure a safe working environment, compliant with Health and Safety regulations and local policies. You will ensure that laboratories are cleared appropriately when required, that biological and other laboratory waste is disposed of and equipment cleaned and stored according to health and safety guidelines.

You should also demonstrate organisational skills, be efficient, adaptable and familiar with working in a busy dynamic laboratory environment. The ability to work to deadlines is also required.
