The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stanford University is seeking a Social Science Research Professional 2 to work with the VOICES Health Policy Research Center. The VOICES Center is an active, growing research lab that focuses on shared decision making, defining quality for US and international orthopaedic care, improving value, reducing cost in healthcare, and eliciting patient preferences. The VOICES lab uses a variety of study designs, including qualitative research methods, clinical research, big data, chart reviews, systematic reviews, quality improvement initiatives, etc to work towards the mission of the VOICES Center and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. This position will coordinate all phases of research studies from start up to closure, including study design, recruitment, data analysis, and manuscript production for both qualitative and quantitative studies, conducted with multiple clinics within Stanford and several other sites. This position will also organize and maintain all study documentation, oversee adherence to study protocol and good clinical practices, obtain and monitor all funding, provide guidance to less experienced colleagues and supervise lab members. This person will also maintain the public image of lab, including branding, management of website, and social media content. The candidate must be able to work independently, think critically, stay organized, communicate effectively, and be flexible. Previous experience in orthopaedics is not necessary. Duties include:

• Assist in designing experiments, exercising independent initiative and judgment gained from completing a variety of high level assignments, including activities such as defining variables, formulating hypotheses, and selecting subjects, sources of information, or planned and coordinating experimental protocols.
• Adapt or work out the details of new, nonstandard procedures, with the supervisor providing only general guidance and suggestions.
• Interpret, synthesize, and analyze data using scientific or statistical techniques.
• Solve problems, and make decisions which affect the direction of the research and result in independent contributions to the overall project.
• Select and apply standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses.
• Co-author sections of research publications, grants, and regulatory reports as needed.
• Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
• Supervise staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field and two years’ applicable experience, or combination of education and experience in an applicable social science.

• Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.
