RESEARCH SUPPORT ASSOCIATE 2, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, to work with engineering and technical teams on the assembly and alignment of custom-designed precision optics and opto-mechanical components. Will work on construction of two new astronomical instruments a fiber-optic based hyperspectral imager for the 6.5-meter Magellan Telescopes (sited in the Chilean Andes), and a wide-field robotic survey telescope (sited in Southern California). Assembly and integration of all hardware will take place on the MIT campus in Cambridge, MA. Responsibilities will include adhesive bonding of custom lenses into mechanical cells, alignment of optics in housings, optical and mechanical metrology using interferometers and coordinating measuring machines, precision placement and bonding of fiber-optics in small alignment holes under microscope; and coordinating with design engineers and local machine shops to manage fabrication of parts and assemblies. Will also participate in the packaging and shipment of finished hardware to remote locations and travel for two to three weeks per year to field locations for assembly and commissioning. Future opportunities may exist for participation in the assembly of spaceflight components for Cubesat or Explorer NASA missions.
REQUIRED: a high-school diploma or vocational school degree, fine motor skills, and the ability to perform fine manipulations guided by feedback telemetry from instrumentation.
PREFERRED: experience with high-precision instrumentation, machining, tooling, or assembly; partial or full completion of a bachelor’s degree; experience with assembling electrical cables, soldering, and surface mount for electronics; experience assembling fluid coupling systems; and familiarity with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), 3D printing, and use of hand and small power tools.
