Position Focus:

Reporting to the Senior Director for the Regional Business Operations, with day-to-day oversight by the Registrar and Title IX Dean’s Designee for Yale School of Architecture, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs for Yale School of Art, and Associate Dean of Yale School of Drama (YSD), the Counselor (Non-Clinical) provides support for Architecture, Art, and Drama students and technical interns for a wide range of issues related to training in a rigorous graduate school program and/or graduate performance conservatory, including development of strategies related to time and stress management, conflict resolution, social and cultural belonging, wellness and self-care. Ability to work full time (37.5 hrs./week), including weekends.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Holds by-appointment individual counseling sessions with students and technical interns.
  • Facilitates group counseling sessions on a set schedule.
  • Partners with Yale Mental Health to refer students with immediate clinical needs.
  • Partners with Title IX Coordinators and Dean’s Designee/Designates for Discrimination and Harassment to refer students with immediate confidential needs to appropriate Yale resources.

Essential Duties

  1. Holds by-appointment individual counseling sessions with students and technical interns.
  2. Facilitates group counseling sessions on a set schedule.
  3. Partners with Yale Behavioral Health to refer students with immediate clinical needs.
  4. Partners with YSD Title IX Coordinator/Dean’s Designee for Discrimination and Harassment to refer students with immediate confidential needs to appropriate Yale resources.
  5. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or related field.  Two years’ work experience in a clinical setting counseling students individually and/or in groups or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated ability to counsel first-generation students. Sensitivity towards intergenerational communication, racial/ethnic identity processing, issues of belonging across race, gender, sexuality and ability in a university setting.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strongly demonstrated individual counseling, facilitated group counseling, collaboration and communication skills.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated ability to support students with issues of stress, coping, and conflict-resolution through de-escalation strategies.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Counseling experience in a rigorous university setting.
